A shadow is cast wherever he stands

Call Him Alic

Today wasn't a very good day.

Alic groaned quietly, his head in his hands. He was sitting on the stump of a tree, which had been taken down in the last lightning storm. It was charred and black, but worked alright as a seat. His chest felt tight, and he took a wheezy breath. It hadn't been his best idea to run on one of his 'bad days', and he was paying for it.

The black haired boy bent further, putting his head between his legs, one hand on his chest as he fought to catch his breath. He was tired, but knew it wasn't safe to nap in the woods. He'd have to catch his breath out here, and then make his way back.

He frowned as he thought on how this day had gone. He'd been wandering the market, trying to decide whether it was worth spending money to get food, when he'd heard an unwelcome, familiar voice. It had been his parents, whom hadn't exactly been happy to see him. After a few rather heated words, his father had swung at him, and the scrawny boy had been forced to run.

In his rush, he'd found himself running along the path that lead into the woods. Although he'd left his father behind, he hadn't felt safe stopping until he couldn't breathe, coughing as though his lungs were going to come out of his throat. He'd been forced to sit down on the tree stump, fighting to get his breath under control.

Now he simply sat on the stump, slowly getting his breathing under control, head in his hands.

@Blackbird

[ Welcome to Terrene! I have prepared a short story that will play out for Alic, in which a number of wild Pokemon will appear. Depending on Alic's choices and interactions with these creatures, one of them could end up being Alic's first Pokemon! Remember, I remain in control of all of these wild Pokemon until the end of the topic. Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions! ]

It seemed the young man wouldn't have much time to gather his breath. Though the sun shined through the trees, the clear blue sky poking out here and there in the breaks of the canopy hanging above, clear weather also meant great environment for hunters. Namely, those flying high in the trees, chasing down and hunting smaller prey, who would have much more difficulty getting away on their own, hoping to find a crevice in the growth around them that the bird couldn't reach.

The beats of strong wings carried through first, before the bird called out in a sound of pride. The pidgeotto was still far off, but the hurried steps of those trying to get away would appear just near him, the pokemon quickly appearing near the stump he was attempting to rest on. The first, and quickest, of the three was the little rodent, the brown furry creature stumbling through the grass. Though its limbs gave it a clear advantage, it seemed this one had two left feet, by the way it kept tripping over itself as it tried to run away, never quite falling down but almost a few times.

Just behind it was an insect, a white body with thin limbs and whisker like antennae skittering forward, seeming much more cool headed. While the patrat stumbled straight forward, not seeming to have a plan or heading anywhere specific, the little creature's eyes locked on a spot across the space. There wasn't anywhere too great for the pokemon to make a clean escape, but it tried to keep beneath small bushels of flowers and berries, to try and keep it's body hidden. It moved in a different direction, officially branching its path from the rodent.

The third pokemon was having a much tougher time trying to get around. The amorphous blob of green with a plume of yellow sticking out of it's head moved and shook its body, trying to move quickly but not making as much progress as would be ideal to avoid a predator soaring above. It huffed and puffed with effort as it moved, scooting across the ground as blades of grass and other plants push against its face and sometimes stuck to its body, making it whine a bit as it pulled away and tried to move. It was lagging behind, and would certainly need more help than the others to escape.

The young man lifted his head as he heard an odd sound, taking a moment to try and figure out what it was. Almost a... flapping. He raised his head up, after a moment recognizing the sound of a bird Pokemon. His assumption was proven correct at a loud 'cawing' noise.

There was a scurrying sound, as a brown furry rat-Pokemon appeared. Almost like a Rattata, but taller and longer, with a fluff-ball at the end of its tail. It seemed to be not terribly graceful, stumbling along the ground in its attempt to get away.

Following it was an insect, white in color. It scurried across the ground, but seemed to be having an easier time of it than the rodent. It was definitely interesting looking, and seemed cooler-headed than the other. It vanished beneath some bushels of flowers and berries, vanishing from sight.

Lastly was a fairly... odd-looking Pokemon. It didn't seem to have much of a shape, just a green blob with a yellow leaf atop its head. It almost oozed as it moved, scooting along the ground.

The boy stumbled to his feet, bristling as he saw the bird flying overhead, threatening the green Pokemon. He bent down, hand grasping a thick branch near the tree. "Hey! Pick on someone your own size!" he yelled, chucking the branch up at the Pidgeotto. He wasn't trying to hit it, but merely get its attention.

The boy hurried to the green-Pokemon, and offered to pick it up, extending his arms. "I can carry you." If the Pokemon accepted, he would scoop it up and clutch it close to his chest. Either way, after the Pokemon responded, he would jog off the path, following the Nincada without thinking.

@Blackbird

When the human approached, for a moment, the gulpin was scared. What would this large creature possibly want with it? Did he also want to eat it? No!! It didn't want to get eaten! That sounded like a terribly painful existence, and how it hated pain. It was shivering in fear as he leaned over and put his arms around it, and lifted. But then, he didn't do anything painful or mean - in fact, he started off, away from where the bird was flying above, and much faster than it could have move itself. Oh, so it was helping him! This was a good human!

The nincada continued to skitter through the brush, hoping the bird would miss it and set its own eyes on some other target. Like the large human that was... HEADING THE SAME WAY AS IT! It pushed itself to move faster, its little legs jolting in the dirt as quickly as possible as it tried to escape the human, unaware he was also carrying the gulpin with him, helping it to escape any danger they were all in. Well, the gulpin likely wasn't actually a target of the bird, but it wasn't about to worry about some other pokemon over itself.

They would make it a bit of a distance, the flapping of the wings starting to fade, marking that the threat had certainly found a new target, which would allow them to relax.Taking this as a cue, the nincada moved to find somewhere to hide, knowing the human was still behind it with an unknown purpose. It found a crevasse in the bottom of a tree. Perfect! It dashed forward, coming out and into view for just a couple moments, rushing into the little hollow where it should be safe from the human.

However, it hadn't expected something to actually be there. With a loud yip, the creature was surprised, causing the little bug to rush back out, not exactly having a whole lot of luck today. It would sigh, if it had the time to think about doing such things. It leaped out, the brown pup coming out quickly, the lighter fur decorated with gems around its neck rustling as it shook its head. It growled and pounced on the nincada, pinning it to the ground. It was currently focused, paying no mind to the human nearby.

Alic grimaced as he scooped up the green slime Pokemon, the thing shifting awkwardly in his arms. His first few strides were rather awkward, trying to adjust to the shifting weight in his arms, but finally he caught his stride, and began to weave through the trees and brush. His breath caught in his throat, and he weaved, fighting to hold down a coughing fit.

Without thinking, he followed the Nincada, hoping that it would know where to go. He wasn't one for leaving the beaten path, so he was rather uncomfortable and uncertain, afraid of losing his footing. The little bug Pokemon seemed to be going faster, and he felt bad for scaring it.

The white bug Pokemon came into sight, only moments before attempting to leap into the crevasse of a tree. Suddenly it was tossed back with a loud yipping sound, scuttling backward and startling Alic into stopping. He tilted his head, watching as a small brown dog came running out of the tree trunk, leaping onto the Nincada and pinning it to the ground.

"This is just not it's day." the human muttered, bending over to set the Gulpin down on the ground. "You can go now, bud. Better find a better hiding place."

The boy stepped forward, carefully grabbing the distracted Rockruff by the loose for on its back, careful to hold it away from him so he couldn't be bit. "No, pup. That Nincada isn't your snack."

Holding the Rockruff away from his body, the black-haired boy looked at the Nincada. "Alright, my friend?"

Once it was placed back on the ground, the gulpin hesitated for a moment, happy that it had been rescued by the human. But, even though it had this hero of the day, the hero was 100% not focused on it. It waited for a moment, waiting, wondering, but deflated internally when it was clear his attention was on others. Oh well. It let go of any concept of having a partner and started moving again, towards a bush nearby where it could hide and relax for a while.

The rockruff was less than pleased when a foreign hand grabbed its scruff. It froze for a second though, the feeling of its loose reminding it of being a pup, the way parents would carry their young with its kind. But only a second of hesitation before it let loose, to show the human just what it thought about this evil action. Barks and snarls decorated the air as its limbs kicked out and flailed angrily, trying to get down from the steel grip that suspended it in the air. But at the awkward hold that was keeping it up, it could only kick the air as its limbs couldn't reach the arm in an easy fashion.

Meanwhile, the bug was... shocked, to see the situation unfolding. It stayed on its back for a moment, as the pup was pulled off and held in the air, the human that had been following it now seeming to save it. So, was that his intention, to help? That seemed... odd. Human's were not known for being generous, especially to those such as itself. They squished bugs, literally, and hunted many other creatures of the forest for food, trophies, slaves, all of those sort.

Rolling onto its legs, it skittered away from the spot under the suspended pup. That wasn't exactly and ideal place to be. Calculating, it decided to move to the opposite side of the human. It needed to study this strange fleshy creature more, and if the rockruff was let go, it intended to have the human between them. Maybe then the creature would be discouraged from attacking it once more. But then, it still didn't trust the human, so it slowly backed away, moving towards the brush where it would be hidden if the human's attention was too distracted from it.

Alic's attention was focused more on the Rockruff and the Nincada than on the Gulpin, after all, the Nincada was in more danger than the Gulpin. Would a Gulpin even make a good meal to a predator Pokemon? He didn't think so, considering they were very... oozy.

The boy was relieved when the pup went limp in his grip, freezing if only for a second. He couldn't believe that had worked, having only heard about the trick second-hand

Unfortunately, it didn't work for long, as the pup began to squirm and wriggle in his hand, yipping and snarling in a way that would be intimidating on a larger Pokemon. But on it, it just seemed rather cute, like a little kid pretending to be their parent.

Carefully holding the Rockruff away from his body, Alic turned to the Nincada, wanting to see if it had been harmed. The little bug scurried behind him, as though to hide from the Rockruff, and he couldn't help but to grin. They seemed like rather young Pokemon, both still trying to get used to the world.

Keeping an eye on the Nincada, he would make sure to hold the Rockruff away and, with his free-hand, would stroke the fur on its back. He would do this until it had settled some, before stepping over to a nearby bush, pulling off some berries. The boy coughed, wheezing somewhat, as he knelt down, offering a berry to the bug-Pokemon.

Then he would sit, making sure to position himself so he could leap up if he had to, and turned to the Rockruff. "Now, I'm going to put you down. I want you two to play nice; if you go after the Nincada again, I'm going to scoop you up."

He positioned himself between the Rockruff and Nincada, before slowly setting the Rockruff down, putting a berry in front of it.

@Blackbird

Even as the rockruff was flailing around, the human starting to try and coax it into calming down, the nincada continued to slowly step away. Though once the little pup had finally come around, starting to ease its movements into smaller motions, clearly showing displeasure but not being as aggressive, the pokemon froze as it watched. The human turned and moved towards a bush, strange but useful appendage grabbing a couple berries to pull them off of the bush. He leaned to offer it a berry, and it simply stared until he moved back or placed the berry on the ground.

If he placed the berry on the ground, and only after his hand was pulled back, the pokemon moved into action. It skittered forward quickly, readying its front two pincers. With a jerking movement, it pierced the berry on either side, securely grasping it with its pincers. Lifting the berry slightly off the ground, it started off, moving to the nearby bush and under it. But it sat in a space where it was safe, but could still observe the strange human, its curiousity not yet sated.

The petting along its fur had actually been somewhat calming to the pup, though it was still extremely upset about this situation. Still, it calmed down a bit, still wiggling for freedom but no longer thrashing about. Eventually, the human seemed to sit down and start to speak to it, as if it could understand those weird noises his kind tended to make. Finally set down, it scrambled a couple feet away before turning to face him, standing tall and proud. It started to growl, the noise rumbling and growing until it released into a bark.

The beating of leaves twirling around was hardly heard, the soft sound no more than white noise as the pokemon got closer. A small breeze blew through the trees, causing the lofty creature to float more quickly, hearing the yapping of the pup. It was so annoying the sounds that creature was making, but it didn't feel inclined to do anything about it. Still, the wind pushed and caught it unfocused, its little pink body flowing into the dog lightly, who jumped and yipped in surprise.

The boy's ears caught the sound of the Nincada moving away. The sound didn't go too far, so it must not have left. Thankfully, the Pokemon pup in his hand seemed to be calming down, no longer thrashing quite as hard and yipping quite as loud. He didn't expect it to calm down all the way, but it seemed to soothe it well enough.

Offering a berry to the bug-Pokemon, it seemed only to stare at him. Seeing that it might be not too comfortable around, or trusting of, humans, he would kneel down, setting the berry on the ground before backing away. He made sure not to stare at the Nincada, not wanting to intimidate it.

Turning back to the Rockruff pup, he could hear the Nincada scramble forward, its legs clattering against the leaves on the ground. He took a moment to look over his shoulder, seeing the Nincada grab the berry before scrambling back into cover again.

Once he felt the pup was settled enough, he would carefully set the cub down onto its paws. He knew it couldn't understand him, but he'd heard that a Pokemon could understand tone, so he made sure to keep his tone soft and comforting. It seemed to work well enough, although when he set it down, it scarpered away, before beginning to growl.

"Hey," he hummed, voice low. The boy would offer his hand to the pup to sniff, ready to snatch it back if it tried to bite.

Alic startled as a small pink thing was suddenly blown into sight, bumping into the Rockruff. Alic groaned, hoping to get the dog's attention back onto him, readying to separate them if the Rockruff didn't react well.

@Blackbird

In the background, the nincada carefully set to pulling its pincers out of the berry. It didn't want to beat up the berry itself too much before digging in. As it set to dissecting and eating the berry, it watched the situation unfold, the hoppip floating in on a breeze. A rather dull pokemon, to just float into another creature so carelessly. That was dangerous. Even the bug wouldn't blame the pup if it decided to attack that dumb plant for crashing into it so casually.

The rockruff would normally have been mad about the crash. But as it was, the hoppip had come out of seemingly nowhere, the rock-type being completely taken by surprise when the grass type came in and floated into it. It yipped and let out a flurry of shocked barks, jumping visibly before hitting the ground, and taking off. The pup stumbled over itself as it rushed away from the hoppip, trying to get away from all the surprises going on around it.

The hoppip landed on the ground and just... sat there. It didn't seem to care much about the pup running or the human nearby, though its eyes did wander over and land on Alic. Otherwise, the wind wasn't strong enough to pick up the lofty spirit, and so it rested on the ground, wondering what this human was doing out in the forest. It hadn't even noticed the bug hiding out with its berry, but simply laid there and waited to see what the human would do, now that his pup ran away.

Alic groaned as he watched a Hoppip float into the clearing aimlessly, bumping into the puppy Pokemon. He took a deep breath, and rose into a crouch, ready to grab the pup if it went to attack the Hoppip.

The Rockruff seemed to be rather fed up with its chaotic day, leaping back and yelping loudly. Its claws dug into the ground and it began to bolt. Alic yelped a rather loud, "Wait!" He scrambled to his feet and, getting a slight idea, he tugged his shirt off his head, revealing a scrawny torso. The boy lunged forward, attempting to scoop the Rockruff up in the shirt.

Assuming he succeeded, he would sit down, careful to keep it wrapped up in his shirt so he couldn't be bitten, before petting it through the shirt, murmuring soothing, nonsense words.

Unfortunately for the young man, the rockruff was too nimble for him. He'd find the cloth brushing against the ground, the grass pricking up into the fabric as it collapsed on the ground, no creature inside to keep it held up and tight. The dog continued off, not planning to come back anytime soon to the little grass type that had flown in on it. Meanwhile, the hoppip simply continued to sit there on the ground, looking up at the human. It seemed this creature was still only interested in watching lazily from the sidelines, not moving and the wind not picking up enough to make it float into the air once more.

If he turned to look, he'd find that he was left alone with the creature as well. Though there were still a couple pieces of the skin from the berry he'd given to the bug, it was nowhere to be found at the moment. When it had left, and how far it had gone, was a mystery. There was always a chance the pokemon was simply hiding somewhere in the brush, but even if he tried to search through and find it, he'd have no such luck. So there Alic was, on the ground with nothing left to accompany him but the stagnant hoppip.

user posted image user posted image user posted image

But, this was only the beginning of Alic's story.

the analytical, intelligent, but danger-prone Nincada ?

Spoiler (Show/Hide)

Humans were dumb.

It was a single fact of which it was absolutely sure. They were dumb, illogical, and absolutely reckless when it came to... well, anything! It infuriated the little bug sometimes, but still it thought back on the day, on the situation it had experience. All it really wanted to do was forget the dumb bird, the pup, and the idiot human in the center of them all. But then, the human had saved another, and saved it personally as well from the assault of that mongrel. Either way, it would do best to simply forget him.

Though following the human definitely wasn't helpful to forgetting.

It couldn't place why it continued to follow, staying hidden and quiet so he would never realize it was trailing behind him. Was it curiosity? Fascination? Admiration? Many different ideas of what could be causing it's legs to move of their own accord crossed the nincada's mind as it skittered through the brush, low and out of sight but still close enough that it wouldn't lose track of the giant creature. There were so many other things it could be, should be doing, and yet here is was, following one of the most dangerous creatures in the entire world.

But, this one seemed... different.

It would follow him to wherever he called 'home, waiting patiently and studying the man as night came. It found a comfy and safe space near the home of the man, and slept through the night, though notably was up every couple hours to make sure it wasn't missing the man leave or something. It was a strange feeling, to say the least, but something about this human made it want to get closer. For studious reasons, of course, but it could be dangerous. Eventually, dawn would come, and the nincada would be at the foot of his home, ready to be discovered in full for a more up close learning experience.

[Nincada will be discovered the next morning!]

the energetic, outspoken, but short-tempered Rockruff ?

Spoiler (Show/Hide)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The spooked and overly emotional dog ran through the brush and away from that pink abomination! In reality, the rockruff had absolutely no clue what had hit it - but it wasn't about to stick around to get whacked in the face once again! So it ran, furry little paws carrying it through the forest that it knew pretty well. At the very least, it knew this part of the forest really well. But it wasn't long before the edge of its known radius came to an end, and it curved to go along it's known area.

It did not want to get lost.

The creature didn't like surprises, so sticking to places and things that were familiar and comfortable were the preference. But unfortunately, in the ever-changing wilds that it lived in, there weren't really many opportunities for it to have some stability and safety in its life. So the forest inhabitants tended to find it barking often and very loudly, at the many new occurrences it seemed to run into. And of course, that had drawn negative attention, which got it to running away because it wasn't exactly the strongest pokemon. Not yet anyway.

One day, it would be a strong hunter, and critters and predators alike would cower in fear at its presence! Yes, that was the dream. But it was becoming increasingly clear that it would need some help to achieve this... OH! It had seen that many pokemon grow amazingly strong and big after living with humans. And, it just so happened it had run into a human earlier that day. The sun was starting to make its descent down the sky, but the little pup rushed through to see what he could find.

And it just so happened that luck was on its side. Even as the sunlight started to dim, the day shifting into the evening twilight before dusk, the creature was able to track down the scent it was looking for. Picking up on the trail, it quickly rushed, faster and faster as it pushed its body to move so it could catch the human before he would disappear forever. This could be its one chance! It rushed down the path, and barked proudly as it caught sight of the human. It ran up, barking to grab his attention and running around him in circles, claiming him and ready to get strong right now!

[Rockruff will be discovered that evening.]

[Choose which Pokemon / story you would like, and respond to it! Note that upon choosing one story, the other ceases to exist and it is safe to assume the other Pokemon is never seen again. When you make the decision as to which Pokemon, you must also decide their gender, ability, egg move, and name. Additionally, upon making your decision you may begin to control the Pokemon. Please stay true to the personalities I have outlined for each of them, though of course you are free to develop them further!]

"No!" Alic gasped as the Rockruff evaded the shirt, the fabric falling to the ground. The little dog Pokemon raced away, disappearing into the brush despite the boy calling after it.

The Hoppip, which had collided with the Rockruff, simply sat there disinterestedly, and the boy scowled at it. But, he couldn't just leave it be to be eaten. So he'd step forward, cupping it in his palms, before reaching up and putting it on a tree branch so that it would be safe from ground-dwelling predators until the wind carried it away.

Turning back to the bug-Pokemon, Alic sighed. It seemed to be long gone, with only shreds of berry left to show it had ever been there. Hanging his head, he stepped over and picked up his shirt, wiping off the debris on it before pulling it over his head.

Then, he found his way back to the path, and began making his way back to Ashfield. It was growing dark, and he wasn't dumb enough to stay out after nightfall.

However, as he was walking along the well-traveled dirt pathway, there came a familiar padding sound. He slowed, hearing a bark and turned, surprised to see the pup Pokemon come running up to him. It began to run around him in circles, yapping excitedly.

"What do you want, bud?" the boy asked, kneeling. The Rockruff yapped excitedly, darting up to him and jumping up, putting his paws on the boy's legs. He offered the Rockruff his hand, and the pup began to lick his fingers.

{Pleasepleaseplease take me with you! Please? Pretty pretty please? Pretty pretty pretty please? I'll bite ya if you say no!} he yapped.

"Do you... want to go with me?" the boy asked, watching the pup tilt his head, trying to decipher what he was saying. The boy seemed to be saying something positive, so he yapped excitedly.

"Alright then, come on Kiba." Alic chuckled, standing and taking a few steps forward, before looking back and patting his thigh. The Rockruff yapped, racing to catch up to him.

And so the emotional rockruff had joined along Alic's side, ready to see where this strange partnership would take him. He was here to get strong, and as fast as possible! Now that there was a human to assist him in his goal of becoming the best, fiercest hunter in the forest, nothing could stand in his way of getting strong. He'd find himself possibly a little disappointed that the man didn't have any other pokemon for him to play with, but ultimately the partnership between them would end up being fulfilling enough. Once Alic returned home, he'd find a bundle of cloth, containing a few items and neatly tied at the top outside him home. A few berries, a few pokeballs (one for the rockruff, and 2 others), and a potion.

[Your starting items: x2 pokeball, x1 potion, x1 wepear berry, x1 leppa berry, x1 nanab berry. This topic is finished now, good luck on your future endeavors!]
