Welcome

Our old universe has
fallen into impossible chaos and destruction, but the Legendaries will save us; are saving us; have saved us. Soon many lives and memories will fill this new world, and give it purpose.

Events

Terrene continues to heat
up, both in temperature and in tempers. Beta and Omega are finally in direct conflict, click here to keep up on it. If your character is part of either side, the expedition & pursuit thread has all the details. And don't forget, our Player Appreciation and the short stories lore contest both end at the end of August!

Season

Summer will be here until
September. The heat of summer is here in full force, as well as the accompanying summer thunderstorms. Bug, electric, and fire types all thrive while others wilt under these conditions.

Cynthia was pleased with the results of her flute, and she allowed her Pokemon to stay safely stored away while she continued her trek, still playing several sharp notes of the flute every few steps. Between good fortune and the flute, she had managed to make it through the Eastern Great Forest without any trouble. Now, she could only hope that it would keep up.

It was sometime in midmorning when she noticed that the air was beginning to feel humid and the trees were gradually growing closer together. No longer competing with one another over water, they spread up as far as they could, trying to claim the sunlight first.

In some ways, Cynthia felt like she was home. After several seasons in the Eastern Great Forest, which she did certainly enjoy, it was nice to be heading back to the place where she first met Amnisiad and where she first... well... started remembering things. In a way, it was almost like her birthplace.

After the violent thundering of electricity and the gutwrenching sound of something tearing, the blackness of the interdimensional portal swallowed the space in the middle of the steel ring, growing and widening until it reached the edges.

After a thorough examination of every inch of wire, the two steel, oblong hoops, and the portal itself, Omega gave a small nod, "The tunnel is stable. Gale, go fetch the volunteers. Let them know that we're ready."

Because it was the first time a large number of people would be crossing through, Omega felt the need to double and triple-check his device. Rather than bringing a bunch of relative strangers to stand around impatiently, potentially rushing the scientists in their careful work, he decided that he would simply have them gathered after the portal was on and everything was running perfectly smoothly.

In a few minutes, Gale returned with the ragtag group. Lucine brought out a small bundle of sticks, brandishing them at each person who was going to go through the portal with a stern, brisk instruction, "Pick one." The three shorter sticks were drawn by Reina, a anxious-looking young woman with long dark hair and deeply tanned brown skin, Jacob, a man with dirty blond hair neatly pushed back off his face, and Leona. She nodded curtly and spoke matter-of-factly, "Alright. If you'd rather use your own weapon, give it to someone else." She shoved a six foot spear into Reina's hands, who looked at it and bit her lip nervously. Next, she picked up the metal dagger and hunting knife, and handed them to Jacob and Leona, respectively.

Quin reached out and put her hand on Omega's shoulder, squeezing it tightly in a silent attempt at conveying for him to stay safe. She was going to be staying back and watching the portal this time, making sure nothing bad happened to it and trapped the humans and Pokemon of Terrene in the Suffering Universe. Being trapped there... her blood ran cold just thinking about it, and all the hairs on her arm stood up, but her face didn't betray any of her emotion.

"The sooner we leave, the sooner we can get back. Keep your Pokemon in their pokeballs; you don't want them running amok in the void. Remember what I told you earlier: stay calm, stay with the group, and stay on the path. Let's go."

With Eve and Edna at his side, he stepped through the oval-shaped, opaque blackness, vanishing in an instant. The rest followed. The void was dark and dimensionless, filled with terrifying nothingness. A simple white path was the only recognizable feature. It seemed as though it were painted onto a ground. If one tried to stop and observe their surroundings for too long, they would surely go mad. Jacob, a naturally curious man, tried to look out at the emptiness, but he quickly grew dizzy and he stumbled, nearly falling off the path. He gasped in alarm, but Eve and Edna were quick to rescue him from his own blunder. Eve raised her spoon towards him and closed her eyes to steady and calm his mind, while Edna quickly conjured up an additional illusion: another square of plain, white solidity that held Jacob's weight and convinced him that he was not falling, and he was not in any danger. Jacob shakily got to his feet and returned to the path, keeping his eyes focused on it closely now.

When they finally pushed out of the suffocating emptiness, they found themselves in a sparse forest. Sunny patches filtered through the young trees, and they could see that the sun was almost directly overhead. Even though it seemed to be roughly noon, the air was much cooler than it had been in Terrene. Small buds coming from the thin, straight trees suggested it might have been spring.

Partially hidden by a few of the young, randomly scattered trees was a house. In the distance, barely visible for the number of obscuring new growth, were more houses, gradually built closer together. Reina took a few steps towards the house and examined the dilapidated state of it closely. The blackened remains almost looked like they had burned, many years ago. But now there were small, dainty plants growing out of its corners and moss breaking the stone masonry down into pebbles.

The only sound that could be heard was the light whistling of the wind, and the only signs of life were the young plants growing all around them, pushing out from the layer of leaves that hid a crunchy and ashen ground beneath.

Behind them, the portal shrunk down until it was about the size of a plate, but stopped thanks to the wire that Gale was holding. He handed it off to Lucine, who was going to stay behind with Omega and guard the portal.

"Did everyone make it through alright?" Omega's eyes scanned the group of people.

Off To War

It was that time of week again, where Soren would, theoretically, come to the Aster house after work and go to the training grounds with Avery. But Avery wasn’t preparing for a training session today; his Pokemon were safely tucked away in their pokeballs, except for Carnation and Bluebell.

The tournament had just ended last week, and it would be the first time they were seeing each other since then. Avery had enjoyed watching the boy's battles. He did his best to stay at the back of the crowd, perhaps somewhat hidden from the boy's view, but it had been rather difficult. The junior tournament didn't attract the same kind of crowds that the senior tournament did, after all. And Avery wasn't exactly small or hard to notice. In the depths of his heart, Avery harbored a secret hope that Soren would somehow manage to claim a prize in the tournament. It was a pity that he had ended up losing to the actual first place winner early on in the tournament. Alas, it was too soon into the boy's training. Perhaps next year. Assuming there was anyone left to fight in tournaments next year.

With the tournament’s end came the announcement that Beta had been preparing, and Avery’s assignment. He was to accompany the party sent to stop Omega. No doubt the witch’s misdeeds were causing problems for people and Pokémon alike. How could they not, when he was essentially playing Arceus? Beta assured him that there would be people who wanted somewhere safer to move to. Avery would be in charge of reassuring them that Crater was still a safe place, perhaps the only remaining safe place left in Terrene, and sending them or escorting them back to Crater.

He sighed restlessly and placed his white-sleeved elbows on the table, resting his face in his hands. It’s not that he didn’t want to go... It really wasn’t. But he had misgivings about the state of things here, and wondered if things would be the same when he returned. He didn’t even know when he would return. Carnation waited silently at his master’s feet, close enough to barely touch his pant leg.

His brown pack was filled past its normal capacity, bulging out slightly along the bottom. It leaned against a second pack, which was equally large and bulky but weighed less than the first by far. It was the proper size and shape to tie onto a Bayleef’s back. Anthuria wasn’t ready as a mount, which meant he’d have to walk alongside the majority of the people in the group... but that was fine by him. She would at least take some of the bulk and burden off his shoulders by carrying the lighter weight things that he was bringing with him.

He was preoccupied and didn’t notice when Rachel quietly snuck into the kitchen and perched lightly on the stool across from him. Carnation, on the other hand, waved the tips of his tails at her in silent greeting.

She gave a warm smile to the Ninetales at her son's feet and she spoke quietly, “A token for your thoughts?”

Avery looked up, his eyes narrowed and squinting, to meet her gentle, patient smile. He shrugged and grunted, “Nothing.” He pulled back, sitting up straight and taking his elbows off the table.

She shook her head and her short white hair bounced against her cheeks and neck, “It’s obviously not nothing. But if you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to say anything.”

He didn't want to talk about it. And he didn’t say a word, just continued staring at her.

She ventured, speaking for him, “I imagine you’re worried about being away for so long.”

Once again, he didn’t say a thing, nor did he move an inch — just kept steadily staring into her eyes that mirrored his own.

Rachel’s gentle smile faded slightly, and she spoke hesitantly, “Perhaps you’re even somewhat afraid... that you won’t come back...”

Avery suddenly shook his head, a strand of midnight-black hair falling in front of his face. He reached up with one large hand and pushed it out of his face impatiently.

“Ah, perhaps not that, then... I guess that was just me... projecting. My mistake.” There was a pause. “Then perhaps you’re afraid things will be different. After who knows how many seasons away, there could be vast changes in the home you know and love... the home you swore to protect.”

Silently, Avery bowed his head. His face was still stony and still as ever, but his eyes seemed almost dim, half-closed and staring straight ahead.

Carnation turned his head towards his master, his eyes a pair of shimmering ruby flames. He wanted, so much, to make it better. But he didn’t know how. So still he waited.

Rachel let a small sigh out through her nose. “Well... I’ll still be here. Crater will still be here. Soren will still be here, or so help me Arceus. Speaking of whom, have you decided what you’re going to say to him?”

Suddenly, Avery sprang to life, standing straight up and sending the stone stool skidding and clattering to the ground behind him. “Ugh.” Carnation leapt to his feet, coming to stand right beside the man. This time, he very lightly pressed his shoulder against Avery’s leg, wordlessly letting him know that he was there, and he’d always be there. Avery didn't need to say anything else for them both to know that he had tried, and failed, to come up with words to properly express what he wanted... what he needed... to tell the boy.

Rachel made a sympathetic click noise with her tongue. “Do you want me to talk to him for you?” She knew this was a risky question, as Avery rarely took her up on this kind of offer. She knew that he had trouble expressing himself, but he was also rather proud. Like his father she thought with a sad, nostalgic smile.

“No,” he said resolutely, the faintest hint of annoyance flashing across his face before he smoothed it back to his usual solemn expression. He was old enough to deal with difficult conversations himself. He sighed heavily, his broad shoulders sinking as he looked out the large, open window. Here came the boy now. He reached down and gripped a handful of Carnation's warm, creamy fur for strength, then he went and opened the door, meeting Soren with his usual stern, solemn face. "Boy," he greeted. "Come in. Sit down." He turned on his heel and headed back into the house, quickly grabbing the chair that he had knocked to the ground a few moments ago and righting it so he could retake his seat.

Rachel greeted him much more warmly, "Hello, Soren. I'm glad you came." Her mouth opened in a smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes on this day.

Bluebell heard the door open, and she scrambled out of her bed in the next room over to come crashing around the corner. She greeted Soren with a happily waving tail and a belted yowl. She came right up to him and sniffed his hands eagerly. Carnation let out a barely perceptible sigh.

Avery made it off the Volcano in one piece, mostly, though the painful, bright red lash along his neck where some of the skin burned away begged to differ. After getting a good night’s rest at the very foot of the volcano, he had packed his tent away and headed back towards Crater City. The dry, rocky soil gave way to the softer, more fertile soil of the Lion’s Plains.

“So... Where are we going?” the Mawile asked for the fourth time since they woke up this morning. Avery sighed softly. She blinked at the stirring of a faint emotion, but it was gone again before she could even focus on it. It was going to take her a while to figure out how this human ticked. He was huge and strong and quiet, and trying to detect emotions coming from him was like trying to detect emotions from a rock. She even thought that maybe something was wrong with her, but studying the Luxio that talked to her almost nonstop when they set up camp reassured her that that was not the case.

Avery focused on trudging on through the long grasses. He needed to train the Mawile and get her to relax around him, but it was proving a bit difficult to stay patient with her. The good news was that her voice was fairly soft and gentle, at least most of the time. The bad news was that she was terribly concerned about... everything. Just about every action he took and every movement he made, she had to inspect before allowing it. Even though she had finally agreed to willingly come with him, she was still extraordinarily cautious. She didn’t want to get in a pokeball yet, she picked her food apart piece by piece, sniffing and licking it cautiously before actually eating it, and she was constantly asking him questions that he couldn’t even understand. Carnation had grown tired of answering them after the second time, so he nudged Avery into letting him rest in his pokeball for a while, leaving Avery alone with the Mawile.

Dylan and Rachel agreed on just one thing when they were planning their house: having it adjacent to Beta’s. As Beta planned out his house, they parceled out a plot of land beside his, just across a narrow stretch that was going to be a small road.

Rachel insisted on a large garden to grow fresh fruit and flowers. Dylan tried to convince her that the space would be better used on more rooms, to allow for a family home that could someday support multiple generations. Rachel pushed back, claiming that they could build more rooms and attachments upwards if need be, essentially doubling the number of rooms available, but once the land was cleared and covered in stone and brick, it would be hard pressed to coax the same fertility to bloom again, even after uprooting the stone and foundation.

Rachel longed for wooden floors and paneling, but Dylan resolutely pointed out the additional difficulty and how silly it would be to use so much wood on the floor, of all places. Simple mud brick, matching the walls, would make a much more practical choice.

Dylan wanted large windows that would overlook the city, but Rachel was concerned about the loss of insulation. One of the most attractive things about having the house made of adobe was the heat kept in during the winter and kept out during the summer.

Finally, they came to a series of compromises.

Rachel got her medium-large garden, Dylan pressed the Joshua, the contractor and main architect, to create a second story. In addition, they designed a living room large enough to be converted into a makeshift bedroom with enough space for four more people to sleep in, if necessary. All in all, the house comfortably accommodated roughly eight people, but it could easily house twice as many if they didn't mind sharing beds or squishing in additional beds.

The floor was made largely of smooth-cut stone with carefully fired clay to fill in the gaps which mimicked the smoothness of a polished wooden floor. It took many hours of work, finding the large stones, cutting them into straight slabs (though the newly evolved Lucario, Lancelot, was an excellent help with this), and polishing them down to a perfectly smooth, gray, speckled surface. Once all the adobe walls were put in, the slabs of stone were carefully pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle. Smaller pieces were slotted in and then even smaller ones were broken into roughly the correct size and shape and used to fill the last gaps.

A few small windows were made, not large enough to overlook the entirety of Crater City without even getting out of your chair, as Dylan had dreamed of, but if you went and stood right next to them, you could see most of the surrounding houses. From the single window on the second floor, even the walls around the city could be seen with some effort. Tight shutters for each window were made from insulating straw and simple wooden-slatted frames.
