Welcome

Our old universe has
fallen into impossible chaos and destruction, but the Legendaries will save us; are saving us; have saved us. Soon many lives and memories will fill this new universe, this new world, and give it purpose. (Our site is best viewed in Firefox or Chrome.)

Events

It's the most wonderful
time of the year- meaning, the time of Delibird gifts and of winter festivals! And as always, our plot events are still going strong.

Season

winter will be here until
Aside from the western Great Forest, which is too warm, and the Desert Strip, which is too dry, snow begins to fall across the region. The chill of the season has just about every area firmly in its grasp. Ice and Dark types become more common as the temperature drops and the daylight fades.

Welcome to the wonderful world of hell.

In this fun excursion, I'll be playing through a randomized version of Pokemon Emerald for you to enjoy! Who will die? What will my starter be? Lets find out together!

Here are my randomization settings, for those curious:

Spoiler (Show/Hide)

I could explain them, but it'll be more fun to just let you guys discover what it all means on your own. Or you can ask and I'll answer, but. Y'know. Anyway! Lets start this bad boy up.

I'll be playing with the battle style set to shift because I don't hate myself enough to do set in a nuzlocke.

Stare into his dead eyes.

Hoenn is my favourite region and gen 3 is my favourite generation, but is it just me or is Birch really forgettable? All he does is run away from a poochyena and makes a 10 year old who just moved in next door save him. Like. C'mon buddy. I still love you, but c'mon.

"This is what we call a Pokemon!"

NO, BIRCH. THIS IS WHAT WE CALL SCARRING A TEN YEAR OLD FOR LIFE. DONT JUST SHOW ME A GHASTLY, DUDE. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU.YOU CAN KEEP TELLING ME THAT WE'RE FRIENDLY PLAYMATES OR CO-WORKERS OR WHATEVER BUT IM PRETTY SURE THIS THING WANTS TO EAT ME, DUD.E LOOK AT IT.

Totally not gonna eat me. Totally.

"There are many, many secrets surrounding Pokemon!"

BIRCH PLEASE PUT YOUR GHASTLY AWAY. I DONT WANT TO KNOW ITS SECRETS. PLEASE.

[dohtml][/dohtml]
The name of a hero.

Okay. Time to actually start the game. I'll just remind everyone that it starts with us stuck in the back of a moving truck, because apparently thats where 10 year olds belong.

Every ten year old dreams of this, right?

Our mom greets us, exclaiming how tiring it must be to ride with all the other trash in her life things. Do you think she left us with any water or were we just expected to not die?

Not gonna lie, the clock always used to confuse me as a kid. It doesn't have numbers. I mean - it still confuses me, honestly. I can't remember the last time I needed to look at an analog clock.

I take out the customary starting potion and get going. I wanna find out what the starter choices are, already!

So, May's mom says the phrase "our daughter" about three or four times when we go next door. Is this normal? Jani? Do you refer to your little sprogling like this instead of their name???

Theft isn't as easy as it was in gen 2. No one tell Silver!

May seems utterly nonplussed about us just barging into her room and trying to steal the conspicuous pokeball she left on the floor. I'm not sure if I'm impressed or made uncomfortable by this fact. How many times do strange kids come into your room looking for your dad, May?!

I told him that Ghastly was bad news. . .

Um...

Is it just me, or does this seem silly? In Ruby and Sapphire it's a Poochyena chasing him around, but in Emerald I guess it's a Zigzagoon. And I don't find that very scary. All you have to do is walk in a straight line and you're pretty much invincible to the thing.

Well, whatever! Let's see what our starters are:

The Mouse Pokemon, The Longevity Pokemon, or the Puppet Pokemon?

I'm afraid this isn't even a competition - Banette is one of my favourite Pokemon so we're going with the Shuppet. It's so cute and small and murderous.

Okay so. . . maybe it wasn't a harmless Zigzagoon after all.

Right. Uh. Well, it's only level 2, right?

. . . . . .

Right. Uh. The good news is that I just realized Sandslash probably only knows normal type attacks, so we shouldn't die. The bad news is that Knock Off is a physical move and I want to cry. The other bad news is that Sandslash also knows Sand Attack, and I'm now banging my fists against my monitor praying for it to set me free.

It begins

Eventually, I kill the Sandslash. Eventually. Birch takes me back to the lab, and I can name this ghost.

Guess that Beedrill got to them after all. . .

Meet Shell the Shuppet.

This is a good time to mention - if you want a Pokemon named after you or one of your characters, just let me know! I'll be making a list. Just remember: they might die. I mean. They'll probably die. I'm not exactly the best at this.

So! We've got a few nonbinary characters here on Terrene, and I know they can be a little confusing to write when you're not used to it. This is my quick and dirty guide to writing nonbinary folks. Hopefully it'll be a useful reference!

Basics
Nonbinary folks are those who, in the simplest definition, are neither women nor men. It's more complicated than that, obviously, but that's all that really matters when it comes to this guide. Typically, though not always, nonbinary characters will not use the standard English pronouns of he/him and she/her. Boy, girl, lady, man, etc are also words that we will need a replacement for.

Pronouns
You may be wondering what pronouns to use, then. Every nonbinary character will have their own preferred pronouns, which should be made clear via their mun's writing or their index entry. This section will be a quick guide on how to use the two most common sets of pronouns nonbinary characters will use, but if you have questions about another set feel free to ask and I'll gladly update it.

They/Them/Theirs
You almost assuredly already use they/them/theirs as a singular pronoun in your daily life. For example, if you're wating on the pizza delivery person, you might think "I wonder when they'll get here." Using they/them/theirs in your writing is a simple exercise of extending this line of thinking to a specific person.

"But Neph! I was taught that singular they is grammatically incorrect!"

I was, too! The cool thing about language is that it's made by the people who speak it. In fact, singular day is even recognized in the Oxford Dictionary now. Here's an example of how to use singular they compared to how you would use he:

He was surprised with himself. He really hadn't expected his grades to be good this year! He'll definitely make it into his top college.

They were surprised with themselves. They really hadn't expected their grades to be good this year! They'll definitely make it into their top college.

As you can see, there's some strange holdovers from plural they - namely, were and themselves in the first sentence. Were Is almost always used in place of was after singular they. Similarly, you would use "don't" instead of "doesn't." When in doubt, you should generally follow the rules for plural they. The rest of English grammar hasn't quite caught up with the singular.

Themselves is a stranger case. Both it and themself is correct, so long as you stay consistent. Personally, I prefer to use themself because it leaves themselves open to help distinguish between the nonbinary individual and a group of people using plural they.

Xe/Xem/Xyr

No, don't worry, we're not in a science fiction novel - though this set of pronouns has been common in them since the '70s. Xe/xem/xyr is another set of pronouns, just like he, she, or they, that a nonbinary person might want you to use. Or, in our case, a nonbinary character!

"Okay, so they're already used in fiction. But how do I pronounce them?"

Glad you asked, fictional enquirer! They're very similar to he/him/his, actually. Xe is pronounced ze Think the American pronunciation of the letter Z. Xem is like them[,/i] but with the harsher Z sound, and [i]xyr similar to here or ear.

We're going to use the same example from the last set to help you get a sense of these otherwordly pronouns:

He was surprised with himself. He really hadn't expected his grades to be good this year! He'll definitely make it into his top college.

Xe was surprised withxemself. xe really hadn't expected xyr grades to be good this year! Xe'll definitely make it into xyr top college.

Conjugating
The best part of any language, obviously. Here's a quick guide to conjugating they and xe:

Other Words
So you know how to conjugate some cool pronouns. But what about words like girl, princess, and mrs? Don't worry - the nonbinary community has spent a lot of time figuring out some words you can use to replace them! Below the spoiler, you can find a list of commonly gendered words and their gender neutral alternatives.

Spoiler (Show/Hide)

Done!
That was Neph's Guide to Nonbinary Roleplaying. I'll probably come back and edit this if any questions are commonly asked or I see any little things that seem to consistently trip people up. If you have any questions, please ask!

It's a brand new day
And the sun is high

Today was going to be a great day; the adolescent pokemon had decided that as soon as she woke up. The sun was shining, the waves were rolling, and she had a mission! Sure, she didn't know what that mission was yet, but that didn't matter. She just knew she had somewhere to be and something to do and lots of cool things to see! It wasn't that strange for her, really. Ever since her mom had died (she wasn't sad about that, really. It was just what happened to moms, after all) she had woken with a mission every single morning.

Yesterday's mission had been to find a new sleeping place, since some nasty Bruxish had scared her out of her old sleeping rock. Now the little spider pokemon slept in a small stream, buried under the pebbles that made up the bed. She was currently splayed out, with just the tip top of her head poking up. With some well practiced shimmying and a little huff of annoyance she was free to take on the day!

Her three little feet carried her to the water's edge, and once there, her tiny triad of arms rose up to create what would be the struts of a dome around her head. Today's bubble was going to be big. Really big! As big as mom's had been, even! The Dewpider let out a strange little giggle and sucked in a huge gulp of water. It caused her cheeks to puff out like two balloons about ready to burst, and even made her eyes look like they were bulging out even more than usual. Practically shaking with excitement, she got to work spinning the nearly invisible web around her head that would keep water in while still allowing oxygen to pass through from the outside air. When she was done, the Dewpider shot the water from her mouth into the net, causing it to expand around her head like some sort of fish bowl.

The daily ritual complete, she crawled up onto the sandy riverbank. After spinning around a few times to try to get a good look at her bubble to no avail, she gave up and skedaddled off into the underbrush of the forest. Something out there was waiting for her, she was sure of it. Something cool. Something that would change her life forever!

That thing so happened to be a person. She'd seen people before, but that was back when mom was alive. Mom didn't seem to like people and always kept her and her siblings far away from them. The little spider didn't know why, though. People were interesting. They were so funny looking! And she'd even heard a rumor that they weren't pokemon - which just seemed silly, really. Just because they didn't evolve didn't mean they weren't pokemon. The only living things that weren't pokemon were trees and stuff, and even then, she'd seen a tree move once. So some of them were pokemon too, obviously.

This person looked kind of boring, though. It was slumped under a tree and wasn't moving much. Its head lolled against a low branch and its hand was curled around something up in its hair. Besides that, it seemed to be resting all of its weight on one of its legs. She didn't think that was a very good idea. When she did that her leg hurt an awful lot. Were people-legs supposed to bend like that? Maybe they needed help. Maybe this could kickstart her career as a pokemon vigilante, just like the Zangoose in the stories her uncle had told her!

"Hey person! Are you okay?" she chirped, approaching with much less caution than her mom would have liked. But mom was dead, so who cared about what she would have liked anyways? The new generation had to pave the way for, for. Um. For justice! She'd have to work on her catchphrase. Maybe it could be something like, hmm. . . dead moms can't make you do stuff! Yeah!

Oh, wait. She had just asked the person something. Right. Well, it didn't look like it was even awake to respond anyway. Her bubble-clad head bumped against the thin person's ankle, big bug eyes widening a bit when she heard it groan. It must be in pain. What was she supposed to do when things were in pain again? She usually just ignored it, since it wasn't very fun. But the person didn't look like it needed help with ignoring it. Maybe she could get its off from under its body?

Puffing up with determination, the Dewpider began to push and pull at the unconscious person's body until both of its legs were laying out straight in front of it. It seemed to hurt it, but not as much as she had expected. Maybe she had already helped! Wow! Now, she just had one more thing to do. . .

~-----------------------------------------------------~

There was something on their chest. It wasn't very heavy, but they could tell it was there. Apprehension and the pull of sleep fought one another, but eventually apprehension won and they groaned awake, eyes cracking open blearily. The world was spinning with blues and yellows and greens and it took a moment to be able to focus, but when they did, they screamed.

They didn't scream because of the weird little three-pronged insect sitting on their chest. They didn't even scream because their right leg pulsed with pain in time to their rapid heartbeats. They screamed because trapped in the strange spider's bubble of - water? Inside of its bubble of water it held something that was very clearly dead.

It was thin and long, its many blue fins making it obviously built for the water. But it was floating downside up and some of its dull grey scales were missing. They had obviously been stripped off by the spider, exposing the muscle underneath. Surprisingly, it didn't seem to be bleeding. When the insect - the pokemon, they remembered - noticed they had opened their eyes, it made a sort of watery chirping sound and thrust its head forward.

They stared. The pokemon stared back. They tried to move an arm. The pokemon crawled farther up their chest. The thing seemed to be shaking. Its legs were nearly knocking together, even. Maybe it was from the weight of carrying the, uh. Dead thing? A spike of compassion shot through the enby, and awkwardly they reached a hand out. They paused, unsure of what to do, but the pokemon solved that problem for them - it shoved the bubble against their hand and before they knew it, they were holding a corpse. That seemed to have pleased the little pokemon, as it spun around with a clear glee in its step.

"Was this a. . . gift?" They held up the body awkwardly. The spider didn't seem to understand, but it certainly was energetic. It bounced around, skittering all over their body. A smile fell across the human's face as they watched it. The anxiety that had been threatening to spill over ever since they had first grasped at the threats of wakefulness seemed to have lost its edge. The little guy was just too cute.

"You're so. . . itsy bitsy." Whenever they spoke, it turned to them with wide and bulging eyes. It watched with such avid curiosity that the enby blushed. Though they were sure it couldn't understand their words, it definitely paid attention. That was nice. They had the feeling they hadn't been paid much attention in a long time.

With that thought came the questions. Questions of identity, of safety, of location. Above were dark, old trees. Below was soft grass and loose dirt. Their grip tightened on the dead thing, dirty and ragged nails digging into the fresh meat without them even realizing it. How had they gotten here? Trying to access memories past waking up to the little arachnid yielded no results. When they tried to shift positions, a sharp pain ran down the lower half of their leg and they cried out.

Instantly, the pokemon closed the distance between them. Two of its three feet rested on their cheeks, and it seemed to the enby that it was staring into their heart. They shuddered, and the spider seemed to only press harder. Its legs moved a bit, pulling at their pockmarked brown skin and causing their lips to part slightly. Eventually it pulled away and crawled down to their hand, pulling the corpse away from them and carefully carrying it back up to their head.

This time it used one leg to pull their lip down and the other two to, to put it delicately, attempt to shove the body into their mouth. It was probably for the best that it did, really, because without that sputtering motivation, the young adult probably would never have moved.

This was going to be an interesting friendship.
