In a moment it happened. She had just stuck the crowbar to the edge of the metal safe, ready to attempt to pry it open and see if anyone had left something valuable in it before they had abandoned their home or perished. Then she smelled the smoke, acrid and thick as it wafted past her senses. Fire. Thunder roiled outside, ominous as it roared across the dry barren waste.
The crowbar clanged against metal as she yanked away, any prospect of goods forgotten as her instincts kicked in, pushing her to get out as fast as she could before the fire consumed the house. It was wood, and dry as bone, as good as fresh tinder to a fire. The whole place would go up in flames in an instant. Snatching her bag, the sounds of cans and coins clanging was barely audible over the rush of her own heartbeat as the bag banged against her shins and she balked at the entrance to the room that led outside. One arm was thrown over her mouth, grey eyes narrowing as smooth poured from the room, thick and toxis as it threatened to choke her. Gritting her teeth, she crouched low as she pushed on, crawling along the ground to avoid the smoke. Not the door. Anything but. Her hopes were becoming slim as she felt the heat building as she neared the entrance though, and finally she had to admit defeat when she realized the way out was blocked by a wall of fire, heat crackling and licking at her. Something must have collapsed, the heat was so intense it threatened to singe her hair. It burned her senses, her smell raw and acrid with dry smoke. She coughed as she struggled to breathe, cursing and trying to make her way away from the hungry inferno. Did the house have another exit? She hadn't checked, there had to be something though, a window or a back door...
The way out of the room was blocked by fire as well now though, and as she choked on the smoke she felt the hungry tongue of flame reaching towards her, the pressure and temperature rising sharply. No. No! NO! Gritting her teeth, she whipped her head back and forth, trying to find something else, some other way out. All she would feel was the intense furnace of heat quickly building and becoming trapped in the room, and all she could smell was smoke and burning wood, clogging her smell completely. Everywhere she turned, everywhere she tested, was more fire. The house was being consumed by flame and she was trapped in the belly of it. She was running out of room to retreat from its advances as she shrank away, the flames greedily chasing after.
Something caught fire. Yelping, she clawed furiously at her sleeve, dropping her bag finally with a clang as she tried to rip the burning garment off. It was no use, the place had become an oven and she was succumbing quickly to the blaze. She screamed as the flame ignited on flesh, crawling up her pants and searing away her arms. She screamed in pain, she screamed in agony, wordless and devastating. Something hit her, a falling beam. It glanced over her head and crashed into her arm, sending her to the ground and pinning her in place. Blood seeped from a cut on her scalp and her shoulder was in burning agony. There was no room to weep beyond the screams, and with each ragged breath smoke drew into her lungs, thick and heavy as it settled down to suffocate her. Tears evaporated, teeth bared as she drew her free arm over her face, curling up as best as she could, the fire taking its claim as she burned, spasming uncontrollably as her skin melted and seared away, her hair singing and burning as her screams fell to ragged wordless pants.
It was bliss when she lost consciousness and escaped the horror of her immolation.
