Welcome

Our old universe has
fallen into impossible chaos and destruction, but the Legendaries will save us; are saving us; have saved us. Soon many lives and memories will fill this new world, and give it purpose.

Events

Terrene continues to heat
up, both in temperature and in conflict. Beta is asking for spies to infiltrate Omega's camp, while Dentelle simply wants to inquire after the scientist's progress. Later in the season, Beta is hosting his annual crater city tournament, where people can test their Pokemon and their leadership and strategies against one another.

Season

Summer will be here until
September. The heat of summer is here in full force, as well as the accompanying summer thunderstorms. Bug, electric, and fire types all thrive while others wilt under these conditions.

◒ New Temps!

Congratulations and thank you to Kira and Chaos, our newest Temps! We are very excited to have them on board. On the other side of this coin, Finley has been moved to Inactive Staff and Zena has been moved to Player. We wish them luck in their RL ventures and hope to see them again in the future!

◒ Specific Pokemon Topic

When Pokemon need to have their lore significantly altered or added to in order to be more realistic or understandable, or if they are significantly changed for some other reason, the information will be found in this thread!

◒ Development Topic Rewards

We have made a slight change regarding devs: completed topic token rewards will only be earned for the first six dev topics completed in a month; for any further topics, other rewards may still be earned but the usual 100 token reward for thread completion will not be earned. Additionally, to keep the site running smoothly and people advancing in a timely manner, we are emphasizing that staff priority will be on adventures, quests, starters, et cetera and that devs may sit in the mod request for a while before being graded.

◒ Berry Locations

In this new thread, we briefly describe what berry trees look like in Terrene and where each berry is most commonly found.

◒ Evolution & Everstones

A few notes have been added to our info threads: Evolution is voluntary on the part of the Pokemon, meaning that the trainer can’t do anything other than encourage/discourage or use an everstone; the effects of an everstone are lingering, meaning that once a Pokemon comes into contact with it (is within a few inches of the stone), it can take anywhere from a few days to an entire week for evolution-halting effects to wear off and allow the Pokemon to evolve.

◒ Autumn Changeover

New quests and swarms abound; we are running a scary story contest; and best of all, the Anniversary Fair is back! Don't worry, the plot events are still sticking around for a while. Rewards for Player Appreciation month will be given out soon!

◒ New Sweet Hearts Effect

Rather than using this as another healing item, on Terrene these items boost loyalty by +2% when consumed by a Pokemon. They also have a catnip-like effect on Pokemon.

◒ New Adventure Topic

There is a new type of adventure topic that can be taken! It is listed in our Types of IC Topics thread, but to make it easier, here is what was added:

"Our newest type of topic is fairly self-explanatory- it is an adventure topic that isn't directed by a mod or an admin. Because of this, however, these topics have tighter restrictions and harsher gradings. Only one set of spawns will be generated per topic; spawned Pokemon cannot be higher in level than the character's highest leveled Pokemon; rare and endangered Pokemon cannot be spawned, and swarm Pokemon cannot be requested. For each Pokemon, you are only allowed two befriending/capture attempts, and as usual, staff will roll for success on these. Rather than earning a straight 100 tokens at the end, 10 tokens will be earned per 1k words. A character may be in only ONE unmodded adventure at a time, and unmodded adventures do count toward the adventure topic cap."

◒ Capture Chance Changes

For pokeball captures, the change is "Each successive ball type after that will increase the catch rate by 10%." It used to be 20%, but is now 10%. Additionally, wild Pokemon who are over 5+ levels higher than the character's highest level Pokemon will receive a -5% chance for successful capture, no matter if it is a befriending capture or a pokeball capture.

◒ Job Directory

Very soon, a thread will be going up either in the Claims & Trackers forum or the Plotting forum called the "Job Directory," and as you may have guessed, will list the characters and NPCs and the jobs that they have. This should hopefully encourage us to interact with one another and with our NPCs a little bit more! Have a character that loves to shop? Make a social with a shopkeeper character (they could earn a little bit of extra money because of it!). Does your character need a weapon? Look up a weaponsmith character or weaponsmith NPC. They will be listed by city for convenience, and if a player character goes inactive they will likely be taken off of the list.

◒ NPC Changes

Also to encourage interaction and prevent waste, there are some changes being implemented for NPCs! First, we will be a little more strict with Resident NPCs that are created. NPCs posted in this forum must be useful / likely to meet and interact with many various player characters. So a younger sibling or a temporary roommate or any other NPC that wouldn't find much use should not have an NPC profile here. This way, when people browse the forum, they'll only find NPCs that they could feasibly/likely use in their threads. NPCs stored here should also have a decent amount of thought put into them, ie they need a good description on their profile so that we feel like we know enough about them to play them well in our own threads.

Second, there is a new forum called "Family NPCs." This forum is for your convenience- if your character has family that you want to keep track of, but they don't have a job/position that would make them likely to interact with player characters besides your own, this is where you can post up a profile for them, and include whatever information you want!

To facilitate these changes, a thread will be created for NPCs who are "at risk": NPCs who don't fit the new Resident NPC requirements, who either need to be updated, deleted, or moved to the Family NPC forum. The creators of the NPCs will get a chance to decide what they want to do with them- if the creator of the NPC is inactive or doesn't particularly care what happens, the admins will decide what changes to make.

◒ Lore Mod

Congrats to Rixie, our first Lore Mod! Lore Mods are staff who don't updates adventures or indexes, but who help with brainstorming plots, mechanics, quests, swarms, and any other behind-the-scenes stuff. These things are typically in the realm of Admin duties, but when we get overwhelmed it's nice to call in some reinforcements.

◒ Anniversary Fair Ending

Please wrap up any open threads in the fair as quick as you can- I'm not assigning a strict deadline for this, but I will start closing any open threads that haven't been posted in for a while, starting probably Saturday.

◒ Update Schedule

This is just a little notice to let everyone know that from now on, big changes and updates will come seasonally instead of scattering in randomly throughout the year. Very small changes will still happen sporadically (such as, a small blurb on Potions was recently added to the Battling & Healing thread), but anything major will come at the change of the season. So if Kaien or I are teasing a big change... you know about when it should come out~

◒ New Temps!

Please welcome Rissi and Blackbird to the Terrene staff! As all these new characters come flooding into Terrene, Kaien and I are definitely going to be needing more help keeping adventures updated regularly, and Rissi and Blackbird have stepped up to the plate to help out! A big thank you from Kaien and I, to you two! We hope you have fun in your new position.

Simultaneously, we are retiring Chaos from Temp-hood due to inactivity, and hope that when she returns she will be able to revive her own characters instead of worrying about staff responsibilities.

◒ End of winter Events Approaching

The season is in its last month- meaning, the winter events are going to be closing soon! The event with the soonest end-date is the Coordination on Ice event. The due date for entries has been extended to the 17th, meaning that you have just over a week to write up and post your characters' performances. The other two winter events, Delibird Deliveries and the Winter Festival, will continue going until the end of winter- but the gift exchange within the Festival has its final round on the 23rd/24th.

◒ More New Temps!

Please welcome Shasyu and Bella to the Terrene staff- both have volunteered to help us out as these many new characters begin their adventures in Terrene. A big thank you from Kaien and I, to you two! We hope you have fun in your new position.

Simultaneously, we are retiring AJ from Temp-hood due to his losing access to consistent internet access. He'll still be around as often as he can, of course, brightening the cbox with his friendly personality, so maybe thank him for all that he's done if he's ever modded for you. He'll certainly be missed on the staff team, but we're glad that he's still hanging around Terrene as often as he can!

◒ Coordination on Ice!

The competition entries are ready to be judged! The judging is open for all members, whether your characters participated in the event or not, whether your characters are even through the void yet or not. This is a great way to earn Participation Points that can be spent for freebie items for your characters! For details on how to judge, read through this post. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask Kaien or I. The more people that judge, the fairer and more objective each person's score will be, so please, everyone, come help us judge the entries! Judging should be PM'd to Kaien.

If you have not posted an entry yet and still want to, the entry MUST BE POSTED TODAY or else you cannot enter.

Spring Updates & Announcements

There are a number of changes we've been preparing for; you likely have heard us discussing or mentioning some of them in the cbox before. Since we've decided to initiate most changes on a seasonal basis instead of just willy-nilly, here they all are (at least, all the ones we were able to finish in time)! Some are small changes, a lot of them are fairly significant. I have tried to write up a decent explanation for all of the changes here, so you can understand the reasoning behind them, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Carbink / Diancie

This was something that I thought I had already introduced, but apparently not, so here it is! "Diancie is born from a Carbink that undergoes a mutation." Therefore, we allow Carbink to evolve into Diancie, in a loyalty evolution, meaning the Carbink can evolve after it reaches 50% loyalty. click to go to the specific pokemon thread.

Challenge Mechanic

Challenges are a mechanic that have been floating around on Terrene since the beginning, but have never been explicitly detailed anywhere. A Challenge is a unique event where the Player takes charge of a certain situation to attempt to achieve a certain goal. For example, a mod might spawn a particularly difficult set of wild Pokemon in an unusual situation, and issue a challenge to the Player to take charge of the situation and figure out a way to solve it, giving the Player control of the wild Pokemon, NPCs, and so forth in order to accomplish the task. Challenges can also be used to make befriendings more drawn-out and realistic. Challenges are usually proposed to the Player via PM, and Player does not have to accept the Challenge if they do not wish to. click here to go to the IC Topics thread.

EXP / Level-up

Don't panic- we're making it easier to level up your Pokemon, not harder, especially in the earlier levels. In fact, we're even letting you retroactively gain the levels that your Pokemon would have had if this system had been in place from the start. This benefit is only for currently active players, though! Click for more information on getting your Pokemon their extra levels; Click to go to the EXP and levels thread.

Jobs / Seasonal Pay

To encourage more realistic play and give our character's skills more purpose, we are introducing a job system. Prior to this, we only have a very simplistic way of earning tokens from jobs: whenever you finished a thread where your character worked, you got a small token bonus of about 50 or so. Now, we are keeping that mechanic but we are also implementing a system that will pay your character seasonally, usually in the range of 100-200 tokens at the end of every season that you / your character are active. The exact amount will depend on what sort of job your character has, as well as what your character's skills are. A new thread has gone up to describe this system in depth: click to go to the job thread .

Loyalty Evolutions

In certain cases, the amount of loyalty required for evolution is being lessened. If it is a baby stage Pokemon that requires friendship/loyalty to level into a basic stage Pokemon, the requirement is now only 35%. All other loyalty evolutions will stay at 50%. click to go to the evolution thread.

Pokedex Starting Chance

The chance to start out with a Pokedex is being reduced. The roll that we make at the end of the character's starter topic now has to be 10 or less in order to succeed in getting the character a Pokedex. click to go to the starter info thread.

Participation Point Prizes

The prizes you are able to buy with PP you earn have changed up a bit to include some of the unique Terrene-specific items, and to reflect the various price changes that have been made. click here to go to the PP thread

Price of High-Tech Items

Expensive things are getting a tad more expensive, in order to reflect/emphasize how rare the technologically advanced items are in Terrene. The items getting more expensive are Pokedexes, TMs, Pokeballs, and Held/Evo items. The biggest price hike was the Pokedex going from 750 to 900; everything else listed here had its price increased by 100 tokens or less. Click to go to the currency, prices, and items thread.

Second / Third Characters

This one is simple: you cannot request a second or third character to be approved if you still have a character who hasn't finished their starter topic. Don't overwhelm the admins, please! click here to go to the character restrictions thread.

Terrene Spirit/Vision

This is a long one! You may have caught bits and pieces of conversation about how Terrene has gotten a bit squishy, a bit fluffy lately. This is not what Terrene was intended to be; it was intended to be a more gritty survival RP. Starting now, we will be attempting to revive the original spirit of Terrene, so be forewarned that things may get a little tougher for your characters from here on out. If you're interested in how this might manifest, keep reading this section.

-Our current Temps and our future Temps and Mods are being advised that the more adventures they take, the more they will be expected to write according to what the original vision, or spirit, of Terrene is meant to be. Meaning, more grit, more intensity, more potential danger, less friendly Pokemon. Temps, click here to go to the how to be a Temp thread.

-Adventures are not meant to be quick and easy; from now on, adventures will have more encounters in them (probably around 2-3 instead of just 1). Additionally, adventures cannot be finished unless the mod agrees to end the story/encounters- with the exception of unmodded adventures of course- so that a character can't just get out of a sketchy situation without any struggle. There have been many times where the player assumes a story is finished (or they get themselves halfway stuck in a less-than-ideal-situation and decide to just leave) and they leave a mod hanging with unwritten plans. So, from here on out, although you can (and probably should) explicitly indicate when your character is intending to head back into the city, adventures will be closed more according to mod discretion than player discretion. In accordance to this, you may want to begin specifying exactly how far away your character is from the city- the further away they are, the more likely they are to encounter exciting Pokemon, but the more dangerous said encounter(s) are likely to be and the harder it might be to get back into the (relatively) safe city. click here to go to the IC Topics thread.

-Befriendings in all cases will be graded a bit harsher. Since we are trying to reintroduce the original idea that Pokemon are typically feral, wild beasts, in most cases it will take more than just a couple posts back and forth to convince one to follow your character home. To counteract this, however, we are introducing a couple mechanics that will make it easier for you to realistically befriend a wild Pokemon (see "Challenge Mechanic" above; a second, similar mechanic may come out in the future). click here to go to setting notes (the first paragraph).

Tokens Earned From Threads

The base token gain from threads is changing from 100 down to 50. This decrease is offset by the job system outlined above. It is also offset by the fact that long posts over 1k words will earn 10 tokens, with a cap of +50 tokens per thread. This is to help those who write longer posts, but take more time between posts, keep up with the average a little bit better. It is also to prevent jobless characters from mysteriously (and rapidly!) coming up with hundreds of tokens.

Summer Updates & Announcements

This season's new stuff! As always, ask if you have any questions. Happy summer, everyone!

New Temp Stuff!

Our excellent Temps are always wanting to help out, so we thought- why not let them apply for more responsibilities than just modding adventures? Now, modding adventures will always be their main and most important duties, but now they can apply for permission to do other things, such as editing indexes, closing the threads that they mod, and so forth. Temps, go here to read about it, if you are interested.

Short Story Lore

Poetry contest for the spring season, Short Story contest for the summer season! Don't be too intimidated at the idea of writing an entire story- we accept word counts as low as 1,500. If you're looking for inspiration, try writing the story of the explorers who were chased down the mountain, giving Onix Peak it's name; try writing the adventure of whoever was the first person to make it to Paradise Island; try writing the Pokemon version of Moby Dick! The possibilities are endless and I'm eager to see what you might come up with!

Houses

Finally, an outside benefit for going through the effort of getting your character a house! Loyalty bonuses are now available for people who want to go through the effort of getting their character a house. Or, if your character has already gotten a house, instead of paying tokens you have to write a thread detailing the house and it's history. This is primarily so natives who would realistically already have a house don't have too big of an advantage over immigrants. If your character has already gotten a house through RP (if they are Branded and given free housing, or if they got a house in the Build It Up quest), the same requirement that applies to natives, applies to your character.

Travel "Push"

There are some of us that are notoriously slow in posting in our travel threads. There are also some of us that have notoriously bad luck with the RNG. For those of us that suffer from these things, we have created a new travel mechanic to prevent travel threads from lasting through multiple seasons. From now on, if your character's travel thread has been open for over 3 months, you can opt to close it out early. For details, read this post.

TM Emitter Renting

Have a TM but no Pokedex or TM Emitter upgrade? Never fear! You can now rent a TM Emitter from an NPC... for a steep price, of course. Read this post for more information.

Updated Job Directory

The Job Directory has been updated with all the character's jobs! Let us know if anything seems to be incorrect or missing. I highly recommend using this as a way to create potential plots. Does your character need a weapon? Look for a character or NPC that makes them. Does you character need to learn how to hunt? Look for a character who is a hunter to be the mentor.

Inactive Characters Forum

To make the Index easier to go through, we've created an Inactive Characters Forum. Our cut-off for active vs inactive is about 1 year. The Retired Character subforum is now located in the Inactive Characters Forum.

End of Plot Events

Alpha & Omega as well as the Professional Army events are winding down. No more tunnel threads can be created, and soon there will not be any more professionals to help train your Pokemon in Crater, although the training fields will stay open. Stay tuned for the next plot events! And, in the meantime, check out our plot-related quests, Spy on the witch in Crater and Advances & Inquiries in Ashfield.

Energy System

OKAY, here's the whopper. Don't grab your torches and pitchforks just yet- hear the plan, first.

So when we first started working on the system, the poll was [6] for Percentages and [3] for Guidelines. Halfway through, it crept up to [7] for Percentages [5] for Guidelines. Now, a season or so later, it sits at [7] for Percentages and [8] for Guidelines. The moral of the story is, there's no way we can make everyone happy. But what we are going to do, is we're going to try out BOTH systems in RP before we decide which one we all think works best.

Since the percentage system is the one we actually have mostly finished at this point, that's the one we're trying out first. CLICK HERE for the information thread on it. This percentage system will be in-play for the first half of this season- and yes, that includes the Tourney. But don't worry, we're all newbs in this system so while it might be confusing, it's not going to give anyone an advantage, especially since in the Tourney, levels are evened out.

Once the system feels like it's been sufficiently explored, we will switch to the Guideline system and give that at least half a season for us to try it out. And while all of this is going on, we will have a Feedback & Support thread open, where you can post your thoughts, the pros and cons you have noticed, and any questions that you have.

Apologies if this makes things hectic over the next three or four months, but we appreciate your patience and any feedback you guys can give us.

◒ I'm an Idiot, Re: Unmodded Adventures

So APPARENTLY I completely forgot that unmodded adventures aren't supposed to earn tokens the same way as regular adventures. Instead of a flat base token gain of 50, it's supposed to be calculated purely on word count. I've been rewarding normal token gain all this time, so, lucky you guys, benefiting from my forgetfulness. I'm not going to go back and try to fix all of my errors, but from now on I'll remember to do it properly.
