Welcome

Our old universe has
fallen into impossible chaos and destruction, but the Legendaries will save us; are saving us; have saved us. Soon many lives and memories will fill this new world, and give it purpose.

Events

Terrene continues to heat
up, both in temperature and in tempers. Beta and Omega are finally in direct conflict, click here to keep up on it. If your character is part of either side, the expedition & pursuit thread has all the details. And don't forget, our Player Appreciation and the short stories lore contest both end at the end of August!

Season

Summer will be here until
September. The heat of summer is here in full force, as well as the accompanying summer thunderstorms. Bug, electric, and fire types all thrive while others wilt under these conditions.

<div class="simpappname">Lucine Ramos</div>

<div class="simpappinfo">forty-one - female - heterosexual</div>

<div class="simpappdesc">Research Partner</div>
<p>
Appearance: Lucine is a waifish woman standing at 5'5", with a perpetual scowl. Her eyes are almond-shaped, nearly black, and frequently sporting her trademark glare. For the rare person that she is close to, she softens her eyes into a warmer, gentler gaze, though the furrowed wrinkles between her brows remain.
<p>
She has a large, warped shoulder scar stretching from her midback to her collarbone, but this is usually hidden by her modest, many-layered clothing that keeps her warm from her frequent chills. Even during warm summers, her hands and feet are surprisingly cold to the touch, so she often wears knitted mittens and socks. She has a fondness for sporting many layers of pretty clothes, such as lace and knit, though she keeps to earthy colors. Her favorite accent piece is a dark, red-brown scarf that keeps her slender neck warm.
<p>
Her voice sounds somewhat frail, but stern and cold. Rumor has it that she reserves a kind, warmer tone for those who are close enough to melt away her cold exterior. Despite her thin figure, she possesses some light, lithe muscle tone, which serves her well in her constant work and travel with Omega's group.
<p>
Personality: Pessimistic, depressed, and guilt-ridden from the memories that are mostly unforgotten, Lucine is spurred on by the desperate, determined hope that Omega's projects will bring some positive gains to the dark world. Above anything else, she is dedicated and sternly devoted to her work and the few people who she accepts as friends.
<p>
She is harsh and quick to judge, with a "no-nonsense", unsentimental attitude. She is hard to work with, especially since she ignores people who disappoint her or make grave mistakes one too many times. That being said, she isn't entirely heartless. She is actually fairly generous, and though she won't offer someone a smile or any kind words, she will gladly give them food or material goods if they are in need. Nobody deserves to suffer, even though she must.
<p>
Lucine is highly introverted. Though her calm, stern exterior suggests she has no difficulty in dealing with others, it is actually an exhausting effort for her. She needs time to herself to destress and recharge from such interactions with a surprising number of hobbies: bird-Pokemon-watching, knitting, cooking, and, of course, reading.
<p>
History: Lucine was found as an infant with no trace of her parents, and thus she was raised in an orphanage during the years of the Suffering. She lacked social skills, and was bullied a lot, which only caused her to grow even more reclusive -- spending her time reading and learning. Life in the orphanage was difficult, with a lack of food and proper lighting, but she did her best to survive, stay sane, and stay safe. The sickly girl learned important skills from the adults at the orphanage and spent her teenage years studying, joining the cooks in the kitchen, and even crafting wool clothes and toys for the younger children.
<p>
Several years wore on and the number of children decreased as the chaos increased. It became harder for Lucine to stay at the orphanage, and she spent time going for walks in the nearby forest. Here, she found an injured Ralts. She nursed her back to health, shared her books and toys with her, and they become very close. Eventually, she returned to the forest to find a Pokemon friend for Blanche, where she rescued a famished Emolga.
<p>
When she was about 17, however, fellow orphaned teenagers attacked her with a Bellsprout's acid. Already weak from malnutrition, Lucine nearly died. When she recovered, she decided to set off alone. Times were hard, and she never settled in one place for long, hiding from terrifying, insane people and scavenging for what little she could find. She became cold, strict, and stern.
<p>
One day, though, she met a man who introduced himself as "Whitney". He wasn't insane or deranged like most, so she stuck around and began to help him. Together, they built a portal to the new world, stepped through it, and were trapped in Terrene.

<p>
It was late morning. The sky was a brilliant blue color, mostly clear save for the scattered, wispy clouds that looked so much like stretched, stringy cotton floating gently through the atmosphere. not yet the hottest time of the day. It wasn't yet the hottest point of the day, as the sun hadn't quite reached its peak. Overall, the mountains were a pleasant place to spend one's summer: the higher elevation meant thinner air and thus cooler temperatures than in the lower, flatter areas of Terrene. In the valleys, one of which now hosted Omega's ragtag group of followers and volunteers, the shadow of the surrounding hillsides served to keep the people cool, as well.
<p>
Notwithstanding, beads of sweat gathered on the brows of the three scientists as they hoisted up the second seven-foot tall noncircular ring, one of them grunting as they worked together to carefully navigate the metal hoop into the two roughly hewn stone "feet" that served to hold the pieced-together object upright. Nearby, an Alakazam that was no doubt a very familiar sight for those who had been with Omega for a while, was providing assistance. She stood with her clawed feet somewhat spread apart in a wide stance, her hands held up in front of her with elbows slightly bend. In each of her three-digit hands, she held a metal spoon upright; the spoons, along with her hands, glowed with a slight pinkish hue. As she used her telekinesis to help push and balance the metal ring, it too glowed with the same power.
<p>
Soon enough, the hoop was properly settled and balanced, firmly cradled within its supportive stone feet. It stood exactly behind the first stone hoop, which had been set up just prior. Omega gestured to wires that were trailing out of each of the hoops, gathered in messy piles on the ground. Lucine was quick to respond, moving to the wires and gathering them up in her hands. Once gathered, she twined the groups of wires from the separate hoops together, in a motion similar to how a woman might braid her hair. Her fingers moved quickly and deftly as she wove the bundles of metal strands together. As she did so, she took slow steps back, gradually stretching the wires out to their full length, before finally laying the final lengths of the wires down onto the ground.
<p>
Omega cleared his throat, preparing his voice for speaking after a long morning of remaining mostly silent. He looked around at the larger-than-typical crowd of people. Unlike their previous trips, he had allowed those who were going to travel through the portal today to witness the portal being activated. This was the first time Omega opened the portal in the presence of an audience beyond his trusted advisers and team. He tried not to let their intrigued gazes distract him from what he was doing.
<p>
"All available electric types to the wires." Omega instructed, in his typical tired and nearly monotone voice which was a little bit airy, a little bit gravely, but loud and clear enough to be easily understood. He had just released his own Pikachu from his pokeball, and the creature scampered over to where Lucine had just deposited the ends of the metal wires. Lucine's Emolga soon stood beside his fellow rodent, and the two of them were swiftly joined by more and more until there was an entire group of them. The most impressive of their numbers was an Electivire, a Pokemon belonging to someone who moved along with Omega's group but refused to ever go through the portal themselves. Still, this shaggy electric creature was one of the primary and most powerful sources of electricity for the portal, so no one really complained about the person's disinterest in accompanying those who left Terrene for the old world.
<p>
"Psychics. Edna." The brief, one-word instructions were enough- any psychic types who weren't already outside of their balls were released, and they all stood at the ready after shuffling around for a moment, focused expressions settling onto their faces as they stared at the wires and the rings. Although it wasn't strictly necessary, most of them gathered near one another as they prepared to perform their part. Edna suddenly came into view, materializing from nowhere, appearing right in the midst of everybody. She punctuated her appearance with a soft cackle as she hovered forward and upward, the edges of her cloak-like body fluttering as she moved through the air.
<p>
Omega watched as all the necessary Pokemon gathered, then straightened his posture and banished the tiredness from his expression. Although they had performed this action enough that most of the people and Pokemon were somewhat well-versed in what they needed to do, he still found it invigorating. It was, after all, the culmination of a lifetime of work.
<p>
"Just as we've done before. If any of these Pokemon are new, they should take their cues from the Pokemon around them. Everyone, on zero." He spared one more glance around at the groupings of Pokemon, making sure they all seemed to be ready and able. Satisfied, he began the countdown. "Three..." It held much less gravity for him now than it had the first couple of times they had opened a portal, but he still counted slowly, not wanting to take anyone by surprise.
<p>
"Two..." The electric types had gathered the wires in their paws, or hands, or whatever digits they had available to them. They were amping up their internal power, preparing for release.
<p>
"One..." The Psychics had reached out into Edna's mind and each other's minds, linked together in thought, reaching out with their powers toward the weak spot in the atoms of the universe which Edna had identified and was focusing her sight and mind and all other senses on. They prepared now for the burst of power which was about to be released.
<p>
"Zero!"
<p>
The resulting release of energy was seen before it was heard, just as lightning and thunder, though the delay was almost imperceptible. The electricity raced up the wires and around the metal tubes that formed the portal, sparks and offshoots of power visible in gold and blue, while the metal itself glowed a slight red. A mere portion of a second later, a sh-boom echoed. After that faded, only the muted but constant crackle of static was heard in the ensuing silence.
<p>
Only a heartbeat afterward, there was another sound, a sound quite difficult to describe but mostly closely described by a deep and thick noise, a sound halfway between ripping and sucking. In the blink of an eye, the electric energy had seemed to be away, slurped into a quickly-growing darkness that spread like spilt paint from the space within the portal. Once it had filled the area, bound by the rings, it seemed to bulge out ever so slightly, becoming three-dimensional.
<p>
"Those of you who are going through, come here quickly and pull straws for the weapons." Lucine's matter-of-fact voice broke through the trance that the portal seemed to put most people in. As the aforementioned people gathered around her and drew straws from her hands, she continued, "If you draw to have a weapon, but you don't wish to use it or you already have a weapon you'd prefer to use instead, you can hand it to someone else or leave it here, at your own risk."
<p>
She worked swiftly to hand out the weapons. Omega and his wife, Quin, didn't succeed in their draw for a weapon. Quin's face seemed relieved, while Omega seemed indifferent. Smith, a well-built man with a shaven head and a full ruddy-brown beard that was long enough to reach down and touch his chest stepped up next to draw his straw- he drew a short straw and was given a six foot spear to wield. He took it without comment, stepping back to look it up and down. Elizabeth, a woman with brighter red hair that fell all the way down to her mid-back, even when tied back in a braid, stepped forward to draw her straw, but received nothing. Elliot, too, received nothing from his draw; however, Leona and Jace both drew a short straw. Leona was given a six inch metal dagger, viciously curved. Jace was given a dagger, about a foot long, and also made of metal. That left the final member of their party, Timothy, a man who looked about Omega's age with medium-length brunette hair, a fairly well-kept beard, and a pair of glasses, without a weapon. He seemed a bit uncomfortable about this development, but he did not protest.
<p>
"Let's go through now. Return all Pokemon that can be returned into their pokeballs until we are through to the other side. Once we pass into the portal, all you have to do is remain calm and follow the path at an easy walking pace. Now, if everybody is ready?"
<p>
He glanced around to confirm that everyone was, in fact, ready. Lucine had taken her place beside her Emolga and Gardevoir, the Electivire, and the other few Pokemon who were remaining behind to keep watch and protect the Terrene side of the portal.
<p>
Slipping his hand into Quin's, who had been standing silently beside him, the two married scientists turned around to face the portal. In Quin's other hand, she held a separate portion of the wires in her hand, to carry through to the other side of the void. They didn't hesitate before beginning to walk forward, and they were soon absorbed into the depthless blackness, followed immediately by Edna and Eve, who remained out of their pokeballs as they still had parts to play in this event.
<p>
All those who followed would find themselves surrounded by... nothing. Nothing but pure, unadulterated, dimensionless blackness. Not even the other people in the portal could be seen at first, but after just a moment, the backs of those who had stepped into the portal before them materialized from out of the darkness. And as the people in front materialized, so too did a path beneath their feet; a simple narrow path, glowing gently white, extending forward into the blackness... or so it seemed, anyway. In reality, they were not moving- at least, not in a quantifiable, three-dimensional way. Neither distance nor time existed in the void, not in a way that a human's mind could understand.
<p>
Regardless of the reality of the situation, they would soon see a white oval shape just ahead of them, identical in shape to the portal they had created and used. One by one, they would see those ahead of them stepping through the white portal, the presumed exit. After they all stepped through, the gaping hole of blackness that they had just stepped through began to shrink. It did not disappear entirely, but shrunk down to a sphere that was about the size of a person's head. It was held open only by the wire which was fed through it- the wire currently in Quin's grasp.
<p>
Stepping back out of the portal would be almost as jarring as stepping into the portal. They went from no atmosphere and no environment to a humid atmosphere, complete with the distant sound of birds. At first, it would seem and feel familiar to the western Great Forest, for those of them who had been there before. There was the same moist and sticky thickness to the air. At a distance, there were even similar trees as those in rainforest environment on Terrene- tall and looming, with thick trunks and thick foliage. Different from the western Great Forest, however, was the salty scent of the sea that lingered in the air. Most people in the western Great Forest stayed near land-locked Ashfield, but here, it was clear to all those who had been near the seaside before that, wherever they were, the ocean's presence was strong.
<p>
There were many other, more striking differences. For one, it was darker here. They had left Terrene just before noon, but here in whatever part of the old world they were in, it was much earlier. So much earlier that it was still mostly dark, with the sky only just beginning to lighten. It was clear that it was just before dawn rather than twilight, as the lightest portion of the sky was in the east. There was a bit of a nip in the air, hinting that aside from the time difference there was a season difference, too. Still, it wasn't so cold that they had any fear of freezing to death in the current conditions. It was barely cold enough to perhaps cause a shiver in some.
<p>
The most striking difference, however, was the construction. They were not in a wilderness area, but in a city. Or, at least, in the ruins of a city. They had emerged from the portal facing east. Within their view were the somewhat broken-down remains of a red-roofed building. It was only half-standing, as it seemed the front of it, where the doors would have been, had been caved in by some explosive force. There were other buildings, also further east of the group's current position, though none of them seemed quite so damaged as the first.
<p>
"A PokeCenter." Omega stated in his monotone, before turning to look at the building which was much closer to them. The group was standing beneath the shade of what almost looked like an amusement park entrance, though not many of the group would recall what that was. It was large, with an archway entrance that had a huge metal latticed gate that extended down from the top of the archway. The gate was currently down, but something strong had torn it asunder, creating a gaping hole in the gate that was big enough for most people to fit through, and then some. Through the gate, a sight unfamiliar to most of them- a train. On either side of the train were elevated platforms, each with an object mounted on top of them that seemed to catch Omega's attention. Dropping his wife's hand, he pointed up at them.
<p>
"Those look like binoculars or telescopes." He stated, and then there was a moment of silence during which he realized that they might not recall what that was. "They allow you to see far off things, magnified. We should head up there and see what there is to see. From there, we can decide where we should go."
<p>
Omega turned back to face everyone. "Quin, will you stay back to guard the portal? Edna, stay with Quin. The rest of you, you can choose whether to stay with Quin or to come with me to the binoculars. Either way, we'll all be meeting up again shortly to discuss what course of action to take." The observation platforms that held the binoculars were only a short walk away, so it seemed to be a simple enough matter to go there and back.
<p>
The middleaged scientist would wait for only a moment for everyone to make their decisions, before beginning to silently move off, stepping carefully through the gaping hole in the metal gate. His faithful Alakazam followed closely behind. Smith, Elizabeth, and Timothy all chose to follow Omega rather than remain with Quin. Elizabeth sped right up to walk alongside Omega, while Smith and Timothy trailed a bit behind.
<p>
Edna cackled ominously as she watched them all depart.

Gale is a hard to miss fellow. He's at a slightly above-average height for a male, just an inch or so under 6 foot. But more than that, it's his loud voice and his peppy, shamelessly optimistic attitude that really makes him stand out in a crowd (especially since he seems to be surrounded by the serious scientist types). He's got confidence and happiness to spare, and it seems to radiate from him. He is a natural, charismatic leader- at least for those who aren't bothered by his pep.
<p>
His particular place in Omega's group is to be an expert on as much about the old world as possible. He has spent most of his life recording the memories of every immigrant he's ever met, regardless of however vague or nonsensical the memories are, and collecting every object from the old world that he's come across- especially books, art, or maps. He has been obsessed essentially since he was born, being raised on stories told by his immigrant parents. Meeting Omega six or so years ago only doubled his obsession.
<p>
And now, his knowledge is finally going to be tested... to be useful for more than just fantastic and otherworldly stories.

<div class="simpappname">Quin Etoe Whitney</div>

<div class="simpappinfo">fortyone - female - demisexual</div>

<div class="simpappdesc">Omega's Research Partner & Wife</div>
<p>

Not much is known about Omega's wife, Quin. Most people are entirely unaware of her existence, except for those who have joined Omega's cause. Even those who work fairly directly with Omega don't see Quin very often. And as few as see here, even fewer ever hear her. She never speaks to anyone, ever, except Omega. A trauma in her past has caused this selective mutism, a trauma that no one is aware of except for herself and her husband.
<p>
There is little that is known about Quin's life. She met and married Omega in the old world, and came through into Terrene with him when they figured out how to make a portal. She is often seen pouring over writing cloth, charcoal in hand- though no one knows for sure because they can't talk to her, it is generally assumed that she is incredibly intelligent. Omega will often confer with her on questions of their work, especially when it pertains to mathematical equations.
<p>
In truth, she is extremely brilliant, but only when it comes to numbers. Omega is better with theories and hypotheses, the more creative and thoughtful side of science; Quin, on the other hand, desires cold hard facts and mathematical proofs.
<p>
Related to the same trauma that has caused her mutism, Quin holds no love or respect for people in general. She no longer recognizes that individuals other than herself and those she is closest to have thoughts and emotions of their own, or unique intentions and desires that are separate from anyone else. This is most easily seen in the way she looks at people; when she does, one has an eerie feeling that she is looking at them without actually seeing them. She looks at people as if they were furniture, or an aspect of the environment.
<p>
The thing that most notice about Quin, aside from her muteness, is Quin's lack of awareness or care for people's personal space. She has no qualms about touching people, and will not ask for permission (obviously) to do so.
<p>
But mostly, Quin just wants to be left alone, and will leave others alone in turn. This coldness does not extend to Pokemon, however: when it comes to these, she tends to gravitate toward the unfortunate or unpopular ones, wanting to care for them and fill their needs. Still, with her Pokemon and even with Omega, she is poor at showing emotion.
