fallen into impossible chaos and destruction, but the Legendaries will save us; are saving us; have saved us. Soon many lives and memories will fill this new world, and give it purpose.

Events

As Terrene leaves behind
the long, dark nights, their minds turn to friendship and romance at the second annual speed dating! And don't miss out on the clover hunt or the poetry season. Our plot event, alpha & omega, is drawing closer to its end, but is still going strong for now.

Season

Spring will be here until
June. The rainy season begins in the tropical areas; the rest of Terrene begins to thaw and warm, shaking the chill of winter and creeping toward the heat of summer. Fairy and grass types relish in the season of rebirth and renewal!

Lore

Avery Aster
36 - Male - Heterosexual
Appearance
Towering over the majority of people like a mountain of bone and muscle, Avery measures up to be 6’6”, and weighs over 220 pounds. He is rather tall and thin, like his parents, but he has become quite muscular due to hard work and consistent training. His face has a strong, thick structure, with a sharply chiseled jaw, prominent cheekbones, and thick black eyebrows. His eyes are a piercing aquamarine color, though they can appear more blue or green depending on the weather and lighting. His hair is jet black like a Murkrow’s feathers, and his skin is medium to light tan.

His most prominent piece of clothing — which is he almost never seen without — is a sturdy, full-length overcoat that reaches just below his knees. He has a white one and a black one. Depending on the weather and his current task, he leaves one of them at home. The white overcoat has cuffs patterned with alternating gold and light purple triangles, and a single golden pin on his lapel. It has no buttons, as it is meant to be worn as a light cover designed to protect the wearer from the harsh sunlight of the plains or the desert. In contrast, the black one is made for freezing weather. It appears rather extravagant, with golden buttons and cuff links. The inside of it is lined with a white fleece. He chooses to wear long pants that are the same color as whichever coat he is wearing, held up by double black belts. Under his coat, he wears a fitted simple shirt, usually a shade of gray or purple, though he also owns a dark red and a pale green shirt. When it's cold enough, he will likely switch the shirt out for a long-sleeved turtleneck. His shoes are black and made of a tough leather.

In addition to his clothes, he has a large claymore with an ornate hilt. Since even the man who forged it couldn't remember the name, Terrenians mostly call it a great sword. Or, in some cases, a "big ****ing sword". The sword is 55 inches long (including the two-handed hilt), and weighs a hefty 5.5 pounds, unsheathed. The blade is rather wide, roughly 2.5 inches at its broadest point, though it doesn't appear so because the proportions of the sword. With a dark leather grip and a golden star on the pommel, it is a rather attractive weapon.

He has an odd-shaped birthmark where his neck meets his left shoulder, but it's nearly impossible to see unless he removes his long, large-collared coat. The purple mark has the appearance of a five-pointed star. His mother used to tell him that it meant he was marked by the Legendary Pokemon of wishes and hope; he's not sure where she got that idea, but he quite likes it, even if it's just a superstition. His mom even chose his last name, Aster, for the star-shaped mark (she couldn't remember her own last name).

Personality
Growing up in the not-quite-free city of Crater, Avery has developed beliefs consistent with the hierarchical society and heavily stratified living conditions — not out of any kind of malice or cruelty, but simply because that is all he has ever known. This leads to him often sizing up those around him, gauging how much power they have and what their goals are and attempting to decide whether they are beneath or above him. Those above him, he respects and rewards with loyalty, at least as long as he continues to believe they are above him. Those below him, he treats with a dismissive, patronizing kindness - the kind one would expect in the treatment of a small child or a senior who has lost their wits.

He tries his hardest to keep up appearances and retain stoicism. In general, he is not good at expressing himself or his emotions, causing him to fall silent even more frequently than he wants to. He has no patience for moping. "Crying is useless. What’s done is done,” so he's been told as he grew up. Or, "Stop crying and actually do something about it instead." In addition to giving him a stoic exterior, this kind of tough love has given him a very realistic view of life. He does his best to not get swept up in optimistic fantasies, nor drown in pessimism. This can make him seem somewhat... boring. He tries to keep a flexible mindset, but due to his rather zealous upbringing, this can be very difficult especially regarding topics that he is too close to to see clearly.

Part of his efforts to stay well-informed resulted in his chatting with the people he meets to learn about their lives and views, but it also lead to his hobby of reading. Unfortunately there are painfully few books in Terrene, and even fewer authors. Throughout the years, he has pored over every book he got his hands on, spending hours reading, taking notes on, and re-reading. He has even gone as far as seeking out copies for himself, for a select few that he deemed particularly interesting or useful.

A main problem of his is his inability to show other humans that he cares. Smiling is not his strong suit, and humor is often lost on him entirely. In addition to giving off a whiff of bigotry towards the lower class and having the distinct air of over-zealotry anytime Beta or Crater City are mentioned, he can seem very callous to people. To be honest, his frequent silence can be mostly attributed to his difficulty in verbalizing his thoughts without carefully thinking them through first. Therefore despite his efforts to socialize and mingle with people (he has many acquaintances), there are none that he would be willing to call friend.

Surprisingly, Avery is actually a very nurturing individual, in his own way. Like his father, he has a stubborn loyalty to that which he believes is right, and like his mother, he cares greatly for the overall well-being of different people. Despite his patronizing demeanor and dislike for “whining”, he can exert an enormous amount of patience and dedication when it comes to guiding people onto the correct path and helping them develop their potential, if they can stand his tough and condescending instruction. He is not as good at identifying someone’s potential yet, but he’s still learning.

Given these various aspects of his attitude — respect or gentle patronization, quiet realism, and nurturing the potential in those around him — Avery finds that he does not often experience conflict. Still, conflict is a fact of life, and just because Avery does not seek it out, that does not mean conflict won’t find him. He generally faces it with a cool, collected manner, doing his best to talk his way out of things before allowing them to escalate. If the conflict escalates anyways, and he feels he is unable to avoid violence, his goal is to end the fight as quickly as possible, by whatever means necessary.

He is quite strong, physically, which lends itself well to hard labor or combat, but he has difficulty controlling it when it comes to finer-detailed work. Detailed craftsmanship completely escapes him. If he attempts to carve wood, he is likely to simply chop it into pieces instead. Thread seems to tear in his hands like wet paper. Even with writing, he has taken to buying the thickest writing cloth available, and buying rather free-flowing pens, because anytime he needs to apply pressure to get the pen to work, he usually pierces through the cloth and makes a mess of his work.

Watching Beta, Avery has come to the belief that Pokemon are a sort of extension of their master, in addition to being valuable tools. For instance, Beta has Ram, who is essentially his shadow. He also has Arthur, whom Beta claims is further proof of his having divine royalty. His less disciplined Nidoking, Beta is very careful about when he lets out. In Avery's eyes, then: in the way that people can choose to control certain aspects of themselves, Beta controls his Nidoking carefully. As for wild Pokemon, he sees them as an extension of nature and the wilderness - useful and possible to tame into something more civilized, but not to be trifled with. This line of thinking leads to Avery treating his Pokemon as part of himself. He is careful to keep all the parts working together well, and is as disciplined in maintaining their loyalty and strength as he is disciplined about his own mind and body. He respects each of his Pokémon as he respects aspects of himself.

Above all, he wants to seek out the greater good, and a better life for everyone. He wants people to be safe and, to whatever extent is possible, happy. He has some ideas on how this can be achieved: order, purpose, carefully designed and structured cities and lives. It is important to realize, however, that none of these reflect his actual values. They are all a means to an end: a better tomorrow. In other words, if someone could prove to him that anarchy leads to a improved safety and quality of life, he would be uncomfortable but would ultimately adopt it.

History

Parents and Early Life

Avery was born to two members of the Council. His parents, Dylan and Rachel, were two of the closest people to Beta. Rachel was about 15 years old when she arrived in the dust and ash, and was welcomed by Beta. She was mature for her age, no doubt brought on by the suffering she experienced before she was rescued from the ruins of the old world. Though Rachel didn’t have the same lofty goals, she deeply admired Beta’s intensity and determination. She swore to help him in whatever way she could.

Dylan, who was 18 at the time, arrived a few days after. Beta saw, and Rachel - tagging along behind him - was there to meet him, too. Beta and Dylan became fast friends, the two similarly aged boys-on-the-cusp-of-adulthood almost like brothers.

The three of them went everywhere together. What was first a matter of simple admiration and a desire for survival became a nigh unbreakable bond. At some point, slowly but surely, Dylan and Rachel fell in love. They tried to keep it hidden from Beta at first. By this time, he was already intensely involved in creating his own society. Despite how busy he and his band of newly pronounced Generals were, he did manage to notice that two of his oldest friends were acting differently, albeit not for several months after they had agreed to keep it a secret.

Beta was happy for his friends. He was too busy and obsessed with his work to fall in love and have a family, so their family was probably as close as he would get. After the awkward moment of Beta confronting them about their secret, followed by receiving Beta’s blessing in a rather long “short speech”, the couple finally moved in together.

A couple years later, 15 years after Beta and his friends entered Terrene, Avery was born. He was a scrappy child who inherited his father’s loyalty and his mother’s empathy. He looked out for those he considered friends. Growing up in Crater, the ideals of hard work and strength were instilled into him even at such a young age. The toddler followed people around, “assisting” with things like carrying a stick to the woodpile or poking a seed into the dirt. There weren’t many other children around, but he played with Pokémon and was taught some basic things, such as writing, simple Pokémon science, and arithmetic, by his parents, and sometimes his parents’ friends. So his early childhood passed fairly uneventfully: home schooling, playing with various Pokémon playmates, and learning how life worked by watching his parents, and Beta.

First Job

When Avery was about ten years old, though, Dylan was killed. He doesn't remember the details, but he died foiling an attempt on Beta's life. Rachel was heartbroken. She delved into her work in an effort to distract herself from her husband's death. Avery found himself... lonely. With his mother working hard, and his father dead, the lessons stopped, and the playtime was void of the meaningfulness it once had. Whenever his mother allowed it, he tagged along with her to meetings and events.

Losing his father, and spending more time around the serious adults, led to a general increase in maturity. Avery learned how to cook and take care of the household when his mother was too tired or busy to feed him. Without a strong role model, however, his development began to lag behind. Even at such a young age, Avery had begun down a dark path, and Rachel was desperate to bring him back before it was too late. By the time he was 12, it was clear that he needed someone to talk to, to guide him, to allow him to thrive.

His mother tried to fill the shoes, but she had always been a follower, not a leader. Though she was proud, she admitted to Beta that she didn’t know what to do. Initially, the man was hesitant. What if the boy got in the way? Would it become a babysitting job? But eventually, as he watched and saw Avery’s quiet and mature demeanor, and in honor of his father’s sacrifice, Beta gave the adolescent an official job. At first, Avery simply served as a glorified intern. He fetched items for Beta and the Council. He delivered messages around the city. Sometimes, since he was in the meetings anyway, he would write important things down, becoming something of a cross between a courier and a scribe.

His job had him following Beta almost everywhere, except for when he was running an errand or sending a message for him. Avery became a second shadow, giving a respectful distance to Ram and the man he began to respect more and more.

When he and Beta were alone, Beta would tell him about his plans, his dreams, and lecture him on how to live and thrive well. Without any fanfare, he gradually took over the role of father-figure. Avery soaked every ounce of it up. Though he inherited his mother’s softness and care towards the lower class, which never fully dissolved, he understood and agreed with the reasoning behind Beta’s various decrees. He even wrote them down as Beta dictated them, at times. As far as he could see, they were giving them a good life, asking for fairly little in return.

Rising to the Challenge

As Avery came of age, Beta’s influence on him grew stronger, even as Beta sent him further on trips and the like. His errands changed from gathering supplies from the merchant square to roaming the outer edges of the city and even going beyond the bounds of Crater to take care of any troublemakers, be they human or Pokémon. During one of his first ventures out into the Plains, one misty spring morning, he acquired a Treecko and named him Pine. Avery's sense of duty and pride in his work grew. Though he experienced the occasional crush and even dated some women who were not too far from his age or status as one of Beta’s elites, the relationships always fell through as they realized he would never dedicate himself to them, for he already had a family. So he continued returning to live in his mother’s house. Some may have considered that strange, or somehow a sign of immaturity, but Avery saw no need to move out of a fine little house built right beside Beta’s own, particularly when his room was otherwise empty anyways.

By the time he was 25, Avery was leading expeditions into the outskirts and the half-tamed Plains near Crater for overseeing resources, expansion, and following up on reports from Peace Officers. Pine was quickly growing in size and power. At first, he didn't see the need in acquiring any more Pokemon. He hoped that his Grovyle would become the strongest ever, and would quickly take out any potential threats. Like Ram and Beta, Pine and Avery would be together forever, and he needed to cement that relationship firmly before trying to introduce any new members to the team. Following Beta's word, Avery trained hard to gain the power to defend himself and his city.

When he was roughly 28 years old, news was spreading that a formidable vixen had taken up residence in the Lion's Plains, much too close to Crater City. The Ninetales and her litter of quickly-growing pups were becoming a menace to the city. Avery jumped at the chance to prove himself and he set off with a small band. It was foolish for him to bring only a Grovyle that was just beginning to bud into a Sceptile, especially against so many Fire Types. After a tough battle, the Ninetales finally fled, disappearing into the tall grass with her nearly-adult Vulpix twins in tow, presumably to return to the Volcano where she had probably come from. They had pushed the powerful Pokemon into retreating back to its usual territory. But at a price. Pine didn't survive the intense, repeated Flamethrowers from the high level Ninetales.

Telling others that he was going to make sure the Ninetales was not coming back, Avery returned to the site of his companion's death. At a loss for what to do, he entered her den, stooping low to fit into it. Nestled into a pile of fur and feathers, he found a massive Vulpix egg, no doubt the spawn of the powerful vixen that had killed his Pokemon. Rage and grief welled up inside him, and he thought to smash the egg. He picked it up, pulling it out of the den, but before he could throw it onto the hard, unforgiving ground, he felt something within shift and a tiny muffled whimper.

Conflicting emotions flooded through him. Loss of his first friend cried for justice, but the baby had done nothing wrong. Would it really be justice if he killed this unborn Pokemon? In the end, in a strenuous exercise of MERCY, Avery's hard features relaxed, and he held the egg against the warmth of his chest. He decided to bring the Vulpix egg to Crater City for now and seek help in deciding.

By the time the Vulpix hatched, Avery had brought the subject up with Beta, as a young man in need of advice from his father figure is ought to do. Beta told him that death is just a part of life, and that dying for something, or someone, that you care about is one of the noblest things a being can do. Supposedly, that was to be comforting. Beta also warned that the continued success of Crater City, and all it stood for, was far more important than a few lives or some petty notion of revenge.

Avery thought on his words, and came to the decision that they meant he should not seek any kind of vengeance or take out any of his anger on the newborn. Instead, he treated the infant with all the compassion and parenting skills he could muster.

Around the time the Vulpix was a year old, entering its adolescent stage, and no longer needing constant and careful attention, Beta’s Persian and Rachel’s Luxray had an egg together. The two had long held a gentle affection for one another, even before Avery was born. However, they had not planned on ever having children, as they were both, in the end, more dedicated to their respective humans than they were to one another. Thus the two cat-like Pokémon had no qualms when Avery offered to take on the Shinx when it hatched.

He was surprised to find that he actually quite liked having a youngster around. He thought it would be a lot more nerve-wracking. But as time went on, he found that he had an untapped well of patience when it came to raising a hatchling and teaching it about the world from scratch. It was different, somewhat, from physically training himself and his Pokémon for combat, but he approached it with the same rigor and determination, and it showed good results.

Becoming an Ambassador

Now with two Pokémon that he continued to train up as much as he could, Avery went on serving as a high ranking official for Beta. In terms of his development, this went on fairly uneventfully. It seemed that Beta was continuing to watch him, though. To celebrate his 35th birthday (or at least under the guise of celebrating his birthday, which Beta had never shown interest in before), Beta pronounced Avery as his ambassador. Perhaps it had to do with the 50th anniversary fair, but it seemed to Avery that Beta was pushing for his message to be heard even stronger than usual.

When they were behind closed doors, Avery voiced a major concern to Beta. The fact of the matter was he didn’t even own a mount, nor were his Vulpix or Luxio particularly powerful yet. Somewhat scoldingly, Beta responded that it just meant he had better hit the training grounds, and to not worry about the mount; Beta would find him a mount to raise.

He followed Beta’s instructions, as the man was bound to do. Avery had learned not to doubt Beta, so he went ahead and continued to train. He was relieved of his current duties and told to instead focus on training, so he did. Training came to a screeching halt, however, when Beta called for him. He was holding up a Pokeball containing the mount he had promised Avery. It was very young, not much older than a newborn, and rather disoriented, so it may take a little while to warm up to him.

Calling the creature out on the edge of a peaceful flowery field, he was pleased to find a small Chikorita. When she finally calmed, Avery was able to examine her. It was going to take a lot of training, trust-building, and growing before this scared youngster was ready to be ridden. Avery was up to the task.

It took almost a year of accelerated, focused training before the Chikorita evolved, and it will likely take some more time before she's really ready to be ridden. But he grew impatient to begin the job that had been thrust upon him. He began to travel between cities and settlements, meeting and talking with all manners of people. He spread the word of Beta and offered people supply packs and even escorts to move to Crater.

Epilogue: Summary of Current Events

During the 51st anniversary, he watched and even participated in some of the activities. Interested in acquiring a water type, and simply longing for new youngsters to raise, he bought two of the "less interesting" eggs. Note that he believes the "nothing special" tag is stupid and all Pokemon have the potential to be special.

Since then, he has returned to Crater City, reporting back to Beta and filling him in on the goings-on of the fair, and refocused himself on training his Pokemon.
