Soren Summer Kolton
13 - Male - Undecided
Appearance
Soren is a young teenager with fair skin and dark eyes. His hair is black and a bit long for a boy's, brushing his shoulders. It usually lays flat and lifeless on his head, but it sometimes forms what appears to be a patrat nest when he neglects to brush it regularly. His bangs are cut to frame his face, revealing eyes that are just as dark as his locks beneath a set of long eyelashes. His face has a soft round look, and he hasn't yet developed the angles or facial hair of an adult.

He doesn't care much about clothes and just wears whatever his father provides for him. Lately that has been sturdy trousers and simple shirts or sweaters. He wears a pair of brown work boots and a newsboy cap.

Soren is also a bit small for his age, though not as a result of any neglect or lack of nutrition. He simply seems to be losing the genetic lottery for height. He is still growing though, so he has some time to catch up with his peers. For the moment though, he weighs in at only 90 pounds and stands about a clean 5 feet tall.

He's also branded, though this is a rather recent addition to his features. This is a result of being born to a branded worker father and growing up in the farmhouse. Some of the other boys were branded younger than he was, but the one advantage of being shrimpy was that he wasn't judged to be a capable worker until he turned thirteen. His brand is right in the middle of his forehead. He would tell you that he didn't cry when he was branded, and furthermore that Crater City boys never cry when they are branded. This is a lie.

Soren doesn't own much, and what little he has, he carries around with him. He has an old battered brown leather bag that he carries around with the strap across his chest. Inside, there's more than enough space for his few tokens and items. Strapped to his hip is a sheath with a small bone knife. Soren doesn't actually know how to fight with it, and he finds the thought of cutting a person or a pokemon abhorrent (just one more reason he's not a fan of farming). However, his father gave it to him after he was branded, stating that he should always be prepared.

Personality
Soren is generally cheerful and optimistic. He moves through the world expecting to be loved and expecting that he will love everyone else. In fact, affectionate would have to be his most notable character trait. He holds the pleasant, if maybe naive belief that if he is kind and polite that it will be enough to make others overlook his other eccentricities. Even when faced with people who are cold or distant, Soren muscles on with his infuriatingly persistent sweetness.

This apparent sweetness makes it all the more jarring when he suddenly pulls a U-turn and becomes the devil incarnate. When bullied or frightened, Soren can resort to ruthless pranking. His poor victim may eventually be driven to paranoia and live in fear of fake bugs jumping out at them or finding fake poop absolutely anywhere. On a particularly malicious day, he might put salt in your sugar shaker...or put poison ivy in your cosmetics.

Soren is also very curious and precocious. He frequently noses into the affairs of other people and snoops around in places that he has absolutely no business being. While he's very intelligent and playful, his immaturity sometimes causes him to be short-sighted or narrow-minded. He's a kid that can see every detail in his puzzle pieces but still fails to arrange them into a bigger picture.

Sadly, Soren is not a good worker. He's not terribly ambitious, and he has difficulty grasping why his role in his community is significant. He becomes bored, and when he's bored he gets lazy. Soren performs much better in school. He loves learning, and he's curious about everything, especially the world outside Crater City. It sounds savage and frightening, according to his education, but it's also large and open and unexplored. It sounds like a world of boundless possibilities if one is strong enough to survive out there.

History
Soren was born to a worker father, and his mother died in childbirth. His family works and lives on a farm with several other worker families. Because his father spent nearly all day every day tending to the farm with the other workers assigned there, Soren spent much of his early life either in the local daycare or playing around the farm barely supervised. The other workers' children were like brothers and sisters to him and the other workers felt like extended family.

Before he was branded, Soren would relish these times when he wasn't in daycare or school and had time to explore the city alone. He never feared for his own safety, and neither did his father. Both of them knew that as long as Soren was within Crater City, he would be looked after and protected. Despite being very outgoing, Soren struggled to make friends. He was regarded even by the other children in the farmhouse as a bit strange. Maybe it was his interest in the horrifying and often morbid stories about life outside of Crater City, or maybe it was his propensity for using big unfamiliar words that didn't seem appropriate for his age, but other children began saying some very unkind things about him.

It started with a rumor that he was a changeling. It's known that some pokemon have the ability to affect a person's mind and even to create illusions. Zorua in particular is told in tales to assume the shape of a child. Thus, the rumor began to spread that Soren wasn't a human child at all, but a zorua in disguise. This was hurtful, and Soren found himself left to play alone more and more. This isolation seemed to make the rumors worse. Next it was said that his mother tried to protect her newborn and real human baby from an evil zoroark, and the wild demon pokemon killed her and successfully fooled his father into caring for a disguised zorua instead. This brought the cruelty to a new level, as it made it sound like Soren was responsible for his own mother's death.

What he could never understand was how other children believed this. In school, children wouldn't sit near him. They wouldn't work with him on projects. They wouldn't even speak to him. Soren had previously been very involved in school. He loved to participate, and he was simply good at it. He caught on quickly and absorbed information like an oddish absorbed moonlight. Once the rumors started, Soren instead took up the strategy of hiding in the background and trying not to attract attention. However, this wasn't even the worst part about these stories. The worst part was that eventually, even Soren wondered if they weren't true. How could he really be sure that he wasn't a changeling? How could he be sure that he was human?

Soren got on much better with adults. While his father was often absent, he was doting when present. He indulged Soren when time and money allowed, possibly out of guilt for being unavailable so often. Some of Soren's favorite memories are of being cuddled up in his father's lap as they finished their evening meal and watched the moonlight wash over the fields. Since their family was poor, Soren's father showed his love for his son by telling him stories, teaching him how to perform chores on the farm, and doing his best not to flinch when Soren initiated an impromptu snuggle party.

Teachers adored Soren and enjoyed having a student who was so enthusiastic about learning. The other adults in the farmhouse found Soren charming, but didn't approve of the boy's seeming lack of work ethic. Many of the other children were already beginning to help on the farm but Soren instead spent his time outside of school wandering off and getting into trouble. He did get into trouble. One group of adults who found Soren more annoying than adorable were the peace officers.

Too often they were finding Soren in places that he shouldn't be. He got into the most trouble when he tried sneaking into the prison. Even though Soren argued that he wasn't trying to free anyone, he just wanted to know what it looked like on the inside, the peace officer who brought him home to his father warned rather darkly that if he couldn't learn to follow the rules, he might end up getting his wish one day. The graveyard in Crater City was also off limits to unsupervised children, but Soren successfully managed to sneak in there several times. He enjoyed reading the headstones and epitaphs. Sometimes you could find famous people. It was also fun to play at guessing which were immigrants who couldn't remember their original names and had to make one up for themselves, though his father (who was an immigrant himself) told him that was insensitive.

Since his branding, however, Soren has had to endure a significant loss in freedom. He was now expected to stay on the farm almost all of the time, and there was no end to the chores he had to do. His father had a very uncomfortable talk with him about growing up, contributing to society, and responsibility. From this, Soren understood that the farm workers were important for providing food to all of Crater City, but surely it didn't need to be so hard. Soren began experimenting, seeing if he could invent tools that would make farm work easier and faster. No one seemed to think this was a good idea either, and Soren was again in trouble for wasting precious time and resources.

Soren felt like he could hardly stand being on the farm anymore, though he was repeatedly brought back by peace officers when he tried to shirk his chores. He noted that the peace officers had considerably less patience with him now that he was branded. Now, instead of just a verbal scolding and irritated looks, they delivered real punishments. Soren was denied pay, which was fair since he wasn't doing his work as he should. However, Soren's father was also given a pay cut since he was expected to keep his child in line and teach him to be a proper citizen. This was meant to send a message. When you disobey the rules, you're not only harming yourself, you're hurting your family as well.

This got the message through at last, and to the relief of everyone on the farm, Soren finally began to work properly and obediently. Soren and his father both received their next payment, but Soren was still miserable. He began to feel trapped. Why did he have to be a farmer? Why couldn't he be a teacher, an explorer, or an inventor? Soren loved his father, and he really did used to believe that Crater City was the best place to live in the world. Now he couldn't help wondering if there would be more opportunities for him elsewhere. Did even wanting to leave Crater make him a bad person? Maybe the rumors had always been true, and there was some feral demon part of him that simply would not allow him to fit happily into the plan his society had for him, as surely any real human would.
